Gooseberry Hill is a flat safe paddock area that was once home to dozens of gold miners in canvas tents seeking their luck. It is ideal for campervans and caravans. Situated just on the outskirts of Dunolly, it is very close to town amenities. There is tap water on the site near the 150 year old apple tree near the main road. You are able to camp privately well back from the road.
The site once had brick buildings of shopkeepers and even a hospital - all now long gone. The double story hotel built in 1862 as a Cobb & Co coach hotel for the Gooseberry Hill gold miners, is the only building still standing.
The land had a vineyard at one time, and still has a small olive grove and quince trees.
It was used in the 1870's as a sporting ground with events such as brass bands, Lantern Parades and even a formal Ball in the adjoining Cobb & Co Hotel. It was a wild and rough time in the gold mining days with a double murder at the butchers shop on the site. There was also a Chinese Camp nearby, as well as gambling dens.
All the trees were removed in the 1860's for mining, but now vegetation is being restored.
At the rear of the property is the quarry and old diggings. it is an interesting walk but beware of old mining shafts and deep diggings. In summer time watch out for snakes. Kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas are all around the property.Gooseberry Hill campsite is an open paddock with easy vehicle access. The surrounding areas are popular for gold detecting, bushwalking and cyclists.
This area was once dotted with the camps of gold miners and had brick buildings such that are all now long gone. There are many historic buildings in the town, as well as a butcher, and excellent meals from the cafes, bakery and Railway Hotel.
The land had a vineyard at one time, and now has a small olive grove and a secret garden of quince trees. It was used in the 1870's as a sporting ground with events such as " catching a fine, fat pig by it's well-greased tail". There were Brass Bands, Lantern Parades and even a formal Ball in the Hotel.
We have small fire pits available for campers to use outside of fire restrictions. Firewood is also available. Pets are welcome but we do have our own dogs so request yours to be kept on a leash at first until they settle in. The area is fenced and safe for dogs. Unfortunately we do not have a toilet yet plan to have one soon, for now campers must bring their own toilet. We also have a wood fired BBQ available for use and will do anything we can to make your stay comfortable.
