Come and set up camp below your own private Butte, steps away from the Fremont Winema National Forest. Small but mighty butte offers panoramic views of the Sprague River Valley. 7 acres of gently sloping terrain with grassland, rabbitbrush, manzanita, gooseberries, juniper, and bitter crab apples, bordering Fremont Winema National Forest. Site is well suited to meditation, hiking, leave no trace camping, orienteering, geocaching, stargazing. Good base camp during hunting season. Highly recommended for folks thinking of moving to the area. Off grid paradise! The feel of this land varies based on your view. On the lower east side by the road you will be able to see the neighbor and his off grid solar setup. On the west side you see national forest property, and your view of neighbor and road will be blocked by the Butte. Hike up to the lower Butte or climb to the upper Butte to see lovely views of the Sprague River Valley, which includes farms, forest and neighboring parcels. Please read the hosts rules section for more detailed info. Please make sure to bring a 4x4 vehicle as the road quality can be extremely rutted and rocky for a brief stretch on both routes in to the property. Recent update (2024): There seem to be two different pages where you can find this property now - on one of them, hipcamp includes pictures from both of the properties that I have listed, along with the property description. (Kingfisher property no longer campable due to the Golden fire in 2023). If you are looking at a page that has Oregon for Everyone at the top and Canyon Butte High Desert Camping by the photos, with an option to click on 10 photos, that is the correct page and info. If your page says Oregon for Everyone but no specific site name, and gives you the option to click on 18 photos, you are seeing photos of both properties. If you search Canyon Butte you should be able to get to the correct page and photos. I will contact hipcamp to see if they can fix this.Small but mighty butte offers panoramic views of the Sprague River Valley. 7 acres of gently sloping terrain with grassland, rabbitbrush, manzanita, gooseberries, juniper, and bitter crab apples, bordering Fremont Winema National Forest. Toilet available
Pit toilet. Look for the large tree to the right of tree camp. Pit is beneath the tree. Please pack out your toilet paper. The pit is intended as a convenience so that you do not have to dig your own hole when shedding scat. If you prefer to dig your own you may, the soil is sandy and easy to dig on the portion of property closer to the road or close to the National Forest boundary. Higher up you will run into rock shelf, not suitable for this purpose.
No campfires
There are two small concrete block rocket stoves that can be used for cooking. These have been placed up the hill from the tree camp sites on a rock shelf for fire safety. Please do not move the stoves from this location. Plenty of tinder available onsite to get them going. Campfires are not recommended during the dry season. Please check with Klamath county for current fire restrictions.
No pets
The neighbors on Hill Rd have chickens that wander. Out of concern for the chickens I’m encouraging dog owners to keep their dogs on leash. If you cannot do this please do not bring your pet. Thank you!
Cooking equipment present
Grill over firepit. There are two small concrete block rocketstoves with a grill on top. They are located on a bedrock shelf for fire safety. Please keep them in this location. 😊
No potable water
Bring your own water
No showers
There is a solar shower area midway between the Butte and the road. (Bring your own water & shower bag). From the trees by the road in the center of the property, look for the dead tree snag directly West and follow the path up the butte to the large rock surrounded by Juniper snags and rabbit brush bushes. Place the solar bag at the top of the rock to heat up. There is a ring bolted to the rock to tie your shower bag to, and there are lower rocks & a towel rack to place your clothes and toiletries. It’s about 7.5 feet from the top of the rock to the base, so hook in the shower spigot and let gravity do its work! (Please do not climb on the towel rack. It’s only strong enough for towels/clothes). I have placed a 5 gallon container by the shower area, which may or may not have water depending on the most recent campers. You can use this to fill up at the Squaw Flats Store in Sprague River - they provide up to 10 gallons for free. On top of the container is an orange box with nature friendly soap (Doc Bronners). Please use this when showering, as other soaps may be harmful to the soil. Thank you! Eventually I hope to put in a small garden below the shower area so that the water will be put to good use 😊

5 m car
Very primitive, but overall good experience.. Improvement would be to level a parking spot / area near road for sleeping in vehicle.

Great secluded and rugged spot
Went in late October and it got pretty cold. Come cold weather prepared! Get there with some time before the sun sets to set up and explore the butte. Beautiful spot with incredible views. Sunrise and sunset were amazing from the top. Directions were clear and accurate. High clearance vehicle is probably needed to reach the location. All in all, A+ rugged camping spot. Highly recommend.

I didn't end up staying the night
Unconventional directions (spent hours driving around looking), unclear signage, no cell service, and rough roads were too much for me. I didn't stay the night. The host seems caring and responsive.
