Camping in the Dordogne with a swimming pool, gym and private lake.

If you know a little French, even just une peu, you’re likely to recognise that the name of this campsite in the North Dordogne translates as 'Blue Lake Camping'. Sounds rather nice, doesn’t it? And it’s not just near a lake or by a lake, it has its own private lake. It’s just one of the attractions of this pretty and relaxed place that’s close to the attractive town of Brantôme and in the heart of the Périgord Natural Park.

It was in fact the lake that persuaded French-speaking British owners, Marc and Jo, to buy what was a derelict campsite more than 20 years ago. They left their jobs in London to start a more family-friendly life in the sun. They were living the dream — a fact that was documented in a 2002 TV programme of the same name, in fact. Fast-forward through the years and that derelict site is now a lovely place to stay.

In the European tradition, caravans and motorhomes are as welcome as tent campers and there are mobile homes on site too. But in a break from Euro camping rules, choosing a pitch is relaxed, not rigid. Campers are left to choose their spot according to preference, but rest assured, if you arrive when it’s busy, every pitch is green and spacious with access to an electric point nearby. In addition to the lake, which you are welcome to fish, there’s a swimming pool and a well-equipped gym on-site as well as table tennis, pool and table football. There’s a friendly bistro and a bar too with seating overlooking the swimming pool.

Marc and Jo still live on-site and are happy to share their 20 years' experience of exploring the Périgord. They’ll tell you where to get the best menu du jour or where to head to for a produce market on any particular day. They’ll tell you which towns and villages are best to visit and can even book you in for rock climbing, go-karting or zip-lining. No doubt they’ll mention nearby Brantôme. A 15-minute drive from the site, this town is a magnet for visitors with its riverside setting on the Dronne, its lively market and its historic abbey. It’s a catch-all kind of place, a bit like Camping L’Etang Bleu itself — as good for active explorers who want to take to the water as for those who simply want to relax by it.

Stunning pitches in a woodland parc with its large fresh pool, fishing lake and fitness suite.

L'etang Bleu is a quiet family run site in heart of the Limousin National Park, thereby offering a wonderful get away from it all kind of holiday. Be enchanted by the nature you are surrounded by. That said we are perfectly situated for you to enjoy all that the Dordogne and Charente regions have to offer. Why not lounge by our swimming pool, enjoy a cool drink or an ice- cream from the pool bar, whilst also being able to keep an eye on your little ones in the play area. Chance your arm at fishing in the lake ( please put your catch back ) or why not have a game of table tennis, pool or table football. If you are feeling more energetic then our on site fitness suite could be the place for you. After a day of relaxation or exertion, why not grab a bite to eat in the Bistro, home-cooked food to suit all, special requirements can be catered for so please just ask Jo who will be happy to help. Not to forget our food theme nights when you can enjoy yummy Moules and Frites a real summer special .
Nearby attractions
The site is within the Parc Regional Naturel Perigord-Limousin and there are lots of walks and ways to explore the countryside. Maps are available on site and there are bookable rock-climbing,  go-karting and zip-lining activities from the site. If that's a bit too dramatic, exploring the pretty French villages and towns near the site will keep you busy starting with the local village of Mareuil, a 10-minute (seven kilometre) drive away. A drive of just over 15 minutes (18 km) gets you to Brantome, a pretty town with the Dronne River flowing through it. You can hire canoes from Brantome Canoe (+33 (0)5 53 05 77 24) and enjoy a circular paddle around the town, visit Brantome Abbey and the caves monks used to live in, enjoy the Friday weekly market, have a game of mini-golf or just sit by the river. Your hosts Marc and Jo are happy to suggest other towns and villages to visit but popular places within an hour's drive include Bourdeilles (26km), St Jean de Cole (37 km), Aubeterre (42km), Nontron (21 km) and not forgetting the capital town of the Perigord, Perigueux, and neighbouring Angouleme, both about 45 km from the site. There's swimming, canoeing and paddleboarding (in summer) at Grand Etang de Saint-Estèphe (29 km away).
Food and drink
The campsite has its own on-site bar and bistro and there's another option in the closest village of Vieux Mareuil, two kilometres from site, with friendly owners. The bigger village of Mareuil (seven kilometres away) is the place to head to for campsite supplies and has a weekly market with local producers on Tuesdays. Les Prommendes (+33 (0) 5 53 56 31 44) is a recommended restaurant there that offers a fantastic menu de jour or an a la carte menu.
