Adventurous treehouse glamping in a Normandy woodland

If campers complain about sloping meadows, lumpy ground and roots under the tent then there's one way glampers can beat them hands down – by leaving the ground altogether! And, if you've got a sense of adventure, Les Cabanes de Fontaine-Châtel in north-east Normandy has found a way to elevate the glamping experience to the next level. Take a stroll through their leafy beech, oak and ash trees and high above you'll discover 10 quirky treehouses, connected to the forest floor by way of ladders, staircases, zip-wires and wobbly wooden bridges. Even the traditional French campsite breakfast is given a lift – with a complimentary petite déjeuner hoisted up to your treetop cabin each morning by way of a nifty winch-and-pulley system.

Scattered across a forest 20 miles east of Rouen, these staggering treehouses have been built in and around the branches of some 27 hectares of trees. While all glampers here should have a head for heights ("only for the brave", you're informed on their website), the place has been designed to suit a wide range of ages and abilities. The most daring of guests can channel their inner monkey with a stay in 12-metre-high 'Berceau', accessed via an irregularly shaped puzzle bridge – with compulsory harness required – while those in 'Terriers' whizz into their sky-high home via, not one, but two zip lines, the first of which is over 50 metres long! For families, meanwhile, there are more sedate options, and the lowest in the range of treehouses sits a more manageable four metres off the ground, with some structures linked together like siamese-treehouse-twins, allowing them to sleep up to six or even eight people. Each has a dry toilet – so you needn't perform aerial acrobatics to nip to the loo – but there’s a more traditional toilet block on terra firma too, along with hot powerful showers. It’s a simple set-up and you’ll need to pack sheets for the bed and your cooking kit; unless you book winch-delivery dinners in advance.

The woodland wildlife makes the experience magical. With cars parked away from the wood, wild boar, deer, pheasants and birds can wander as freely as the kids. Treehouses make for great hides to watch it all from but you can explore on foot too and there’s an orienteering experience to help you find your way. On a wider level, meanwhile, it’s less than an hour to the ferry ports at Le Havre and Dieppe and just under two from Calais; making Les Cabanes de Fontaine-Châtel as good for a weekend away, as a week-long summer holiday – or as an extremely left-field option to break a longer journey south. And whether you're looking for a sky-high couples’ hideaway or a place for your own Swiss Family Robinson-style adventure, there should be a treehouse in this woodland village to suit.

"Berceau" Tree House
Beautiful Berceau Treehouse
This was a very special and beautiful place to spend the night. We were welcomed very friendly by the hosts. We climbed up the trees in the dark and woke up with a beautiful view over the forest in autumn colors. Perfect last night of our holiday in Normandy.

"Canyon" Tree House
A fun night in the forest!
Remote camping in the depths of the forest. Each treehouse is set in a secluded area and all are completely unique (pay close attention to the height of the treehouse you book). We stayed in Canyon which had a rope bridge, balcony, comfortable double and single bunk beds (bring sheets duvets and pillows provided) and a compost loo which we had to remove the bag from at the end of the stay. There was a cannister of water and bowl to wash hands etc, a few candles and lanterns and outside seating on the treehouse deck. Other than this, nothing else is provided (although you could sign out some plates). We brought food for our evening meal from local shops and our own plates, cutlery, glasses etc. There are no cooking/bbq facilities on site. Breakfast (baguette/croissant, jams and coffee/hot chocolate) is delivered in the morning and our son enjoyed hoisting it up to the deck. We enjoyed sitting out at night and listening to the sounds of the forest and even heard a wild boar foraging just below. There is an immaculate loo and shower block about 10 minutes walk through the forest at the main reception. This site is basic and it is important to think about and plan what you want to bring as it can be quite a walk back to the car. We were able to use a wheelbarrow to carry our bags. We loved the remoteness and being totally off grid with the excitement of sleeping up a tree in such a peaceful setting!

"Canyon" Tree House
Treehouse - rustic & lovely!
This place is magical - we stayed for one night with our 5yr old daughter in the Canyon treehouse - we had the best nights sleep. Hearing the tawny owls at night and breakfast delivered via basket, just a couple of the things we loved about it. I highly recommend as a different place to stay for the night or weekend.

Adventurous treehouse glamping in a Normandy woodland. With hot temperatures, warm croissants and a variety of cool locations, it’s no wonder that camping in France is such a popular way to holiday. You might think that nothing could top the classic French camping experience but Normandy site, Les Cabanes de Fontaine-Châtel, has found a way to elevate it all. Book a stay here and you’ll be glamping, not camping, in one of the site’s 10 quirky treehouses. Even the traditional French campsite breakfast delivery is given a lift – with an included petit déjeuner hoisted up to your treetop cabin by way of a winch and pulley system. The treehouses have been built in and around the branches of trees in a 27-hectare woodland some 20 miles outside Rouen. It’s less than an hour from the ferry ports at Le Havre and Dieppe and just under two from Calais; as good for a weekend away, as a week-long summer holiday – or as a memorable place to break a longer journey. And whether you're looking for a cosy couples’ hideaway or a place for your own Swiss Family Robinson-style adventure, there should be a treehouse for you in this woodland village. Cabins sleep between two and six and are kitted out with beds to suit, with a table and chairs and a little deck outside. Some are accessed by spiral staircases, some by ladders and some by bridges. Choose yours by ability, agility and sense of adventure. There’s also a dry toilet with each so you don’t have to perform acrobatics to nip to the loo – but there’s a more traditional toilet block on the ground too, along with the hot-water showers. It’s a simple set-up and you’ll need to pack sheets and warm sleeping bags for the bed; and make full use of the aerial-delivery basket dinners bookable in advance. The woodland wildlife makes the experience magical. With cars parked away from the wood, wild boar, deer, pheasants and birds can wander as freely as the kids. Treehouses make for great hides to watch it all from but you can explore on foot too and there’s an orienteering experience to help you find your way. And if life in the trees has whet your appetite, head to the treetop adventure playground at Accrobranche Arbr’en Ciel, one of several tourist attractions within easy driving distance of this enchanting and adventurous site.

The treehouses are set in a 27-hectare woodland which you are welcome to explore and there’s an orienteering course (€2 charge) around the site.
