Built on the site of the old Hartley Vale oil shale works that closed in 1916, 'The Refinery" was re-established in 2018 as an organic garlic farm now owned by James and Michelle and their two children. The farm features a hempcrete building named 'The Stinking Rose' used for drying and curing garlic that also acts as a big room for garlic feasts during planting (March, April and May each year). The building also houses toilet and shower facilities for guests when camping on site. On some evenings, the sky puts on a real show of golden sun rays with pink, purple and blue clouds while swallows flit across the garden beds catching moths. Our guests like to sit around their campfires watching the spectacular show while kids and dogs run around without the burden of leashes or noise of city traffic. We invite you to come and camp on our organic garlic farm. Our whole property is an exercise in sustainability.  We live off grid and are highly committed to the circular economy and connecting people from the city with rural areas.  We use sustainable farming methods to produce organically grown garlic on an elevated site in beautiful Hartley Vale (near Lithgow),  just 2 hours from Sydney.  We especially love guests with young children and dogs and can offer paddock to plate meals on request for large groups, served in our beautiful farmhouse. We have composting toilets. Hot showers. Pets welcome. We sometimes offer garlic tasting after harvest (time dependent, once per year) so be sure to ask us! Farm camping with stunning views
Disappointing
Sadly there is not much to recommend this campsite other than it keeps you out of the tourist overloaded areas, and the sunset view is lovely. The property and house seem to be very much a work in progress. There is very little done on the property to support or to welcome guests eg there was no one there to meet us, (Denise was in Sydney) other than the dog (luckily our dog is very chilled and didn't mind the fact that the farm dog did not leave our camp other than when it was barking in the night). The toilet while looking great in the pics was dirty, it had a filthy floor and an overflowing bin. The suggested shower is in the family bathroom (inappropriate for guests). Previous campers had obviously used the bush for toileting as there was toilet paper strewn around. perhaps because it is quite a long way from the campsite to the rear of the house for the toilet. Also luckily the road is quiet, as the campsite essentially borders it. We left after 2 days of our 4 day booking.

Back to nature
Stunning views, quiet location and great hosts.. what's not to love!. My 3 boys had a ball roaming around the place, playing with the world's friendliest dog, Steven and making a fire each dusk. At night the stars were spectacular! The boys liked it so much here that they made us promise well come back next year. Too easy!

Collits Inn Wedding Camping Option.
Michelle was such a great host, we were having a wedding up at Collits Inn and we needed camping options and Michelle went beyond what we needed by offering to supply our guests with breakfast. Highly recommend.

Thank you for having us at your place. Every thing went fine and our spot at the top of the hill was great. Like everyone else Stevie was great and our dog Toto enjoyed his company

Amazing stargazing at night!
I loved camping on Michelle’s property! Highlights were Stevie the Border collie, the amazing views surrounding us and the stargazing at night. <3 There were only a few of us camping so there were a lot of space to walk around and was peaceful. The toilet was a bit far as it was at the back of their house but it was ok for a quick walk around. The wind that weekend was strong so we were just chilling looking at the stunning moutain views most of the time. Would definitely come back :)
