Barkala Farmstay is a self-sustaining farm located off the grid, supplying our own water and solar electricity. The Farm is a grazing property situated on 13,000 acres surrounded by the tranquil Pilliga Forest. Only access is a 10km dirt road of the Newell Highway, north of Coonabarabran (follow directions below). As well as farm animals, the farm hosts a thriving community of birds and well- designed bush tracks where you can discover local wildlife, plants, Aboriginal artifacts, great lookouts, sandstone cliffs and caves all in the midst of the Pilliga Forrest. Barkala Farmstay is also home to Pilliga Pottery and the Blue Wren Bush Cafe (closed Wednesdays), offering pottery demonstrations and workshops, traditional European inspired fresh foods with ingredients from our organic green house and homemade Gelato. The property offers two camp sites, Goanna and Kellies Campground, which are freely available to anyone who books a camping stay with us. There are no allocated camping spots in either campground, thus it is first come, first serve. We offer large camping spots with no campground boundaries hence there is space for vehicles of any size. Both camping sites offer compost toilets and showers (although we encourage short showers due to our off-grid, self-sustaining farm). You are welcome to stop by the reception upon check-in to hear more about our campgrounds and we can help you find the perfect camp spot and tell you more about what we have to offer. Campers are welcome to enjoy feeding of our farm animals, our saltwater pool and campfires. Firewood can be collected on the property by yourself, or you can visit the reception to buy firewood. There is no phone reception close to any buildings but free limited Wi-Fi in the cafe area.Barkala Farm is a self-sustaining farm located off the grid (follow directions below), supplying our own water and solar electricity. Family Friendly Camping
This was the first time for our family camping away from the Central Coast in a while and we camped out on the Kellies side of this wonderful farmstay. We had ample room around us, plenty of space in between other campers. Quiet and yet enough going on to entertain the family. We swam in the pool on one of the days when it got hot, had nice camp fires, ate some great wood fired oven pizzas and home made gelato for lunch in the cafe, followed by a nice cold beer. Plenty of dead wood around for making your own fires. Pottery classes onsite available each day for an extra activity. They seemed to have it all, which is good for those who dont camp much, but want the experience of a larger campsite and the convenience of glamping and other creature comforts such as showers and composting toilets. A quaint, creative space with rustic sustainable practices and permaculture type homestead gardens. Great customer service and sociable guests. Dogs allowed, which was great. However, the flies were relentless, possibly due to the farm animals onsite. The only thing that lacked was the amount of saw dust/wood shavings available in the toilets. If there were good heaps to scoop from, that would make all the Difference. Other than that, would be happy to recommend as well as return for another stay in the future. Thanks Maria and team

Definitely the pick of the area
What a cool little find. I had no issues accessing the camp in an old, 2wd Impreza, down a 15 minute dirt road. It did rain overnight though and if it was a bit more saturated I could imagine having traction issues. I camped in the second camping area and felt secure but also totally separate from the outside world, which is what I was after. I would love to try out the cottages sometime, they look fun. The pottery barn, the gardens and the cafe are all lovely. In fact, I would go as far as to say that's THE best omelette I have ever eaten, and the coffee was great too. The hosts were so kind and friendly. If I had been in a better frame of mind at the time I would have loved to chat to everyone at brekky. Thanks for having me.
