Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan. Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers. Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs. However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

Orchard Cabin
Scenic Homestead Adventure!
Jill and Nic are outstanding hosts who make you feel right at home with their warm hospitality and engaging conversations. Their homestead is absolutely stunning! We stayed in the Orchard cabin for two nights and found ourselves wishing we could have stayed longer. The cabin was perfectly designed for our group of four, featuring thoughtful touches throughout—from the delicious welcome cookies to the incredibly cozy bedding and spacious layout that truly felt like a home away from home. Plus, with easy access to trailheads right off the property, we were able to dive into nature in no time. A highlight was interacting with the animals—dogs, yaks, a ram, ducks, and chickens—which made our stay feel even more special. We even braved a quick November dip in their pond! I can’t recommend this place highly enough—if you’re considering booking, don’t hesitate! It’s an unforgettable experience, and we can’t wait to come back.

The Pond Cabin
Homesteading at its finest.
Jill and Nick were simply the best host. They've created an incredible experience down to every detail and we are so thankful that they choose to share it with us. The cabin was wonderful, with all the essentials you may need. Our two dogs were so sad to leave, as were we. We will surely be back and can't wait until next time. Thank you both!

The Pond Cabin
The Pond Cabin was absolutely perfect for a weekend in the woods! The pond, wood stove, fire pit, ducks, etc. all made it a great experience. It was the first time the kids had gotten to play games by oil lamp light! Highly recommend!

Orchard Cabin
Perfect Woodsy Getaway !
My husband and I loved staying here! Arrival to the cabin was a welcoming sight after the trip in from town, directions described well by the owners! The Orchard Cabin was as expected- quiet, cozy, clean and with all the necessities!! We loved all the small details: the warm fireplace was my favorite (nothing beats the warmth and cracking sounds of a real indoor fire), the large covered porch, the entire homestead working farm, scenic pond, clean composting outhouse, the record player gave fun sounds during our monopoly game as well! Climbing up the ladder to the bedrooms and loft walk-way was very unique and cool. We chatted with owner Nick before leaving and he is very knowledgeable and purposeful with their family’s way of life!! We enjoyed seeing and learning about their animals and way of life ! Can’t wait to be back next !!!

Orchard Cabin
A Magical Cabin In The Forest
Staying at The Orchard Cabin and the entire Bear Tree Homestead was truly magical—like stepping into a world straight out of Harry Potter. The cabin, nestled in front of a serene pond and framed by a charming apple orchard, was both picturesque and cozy. Despite the lack of running water, we never missed it; everything was so thoughtfully prepared that it added to the rustic charm. The warmth of the cabin made us feel instantly at home, and the genuine hospitality from Nick, Jill, and all their wonderful farm friends made our visit unforgettable. Jill.. Your cookies were amazing! Thank you so much for creating such a special experience for my family, as it was the perfect setting to spend time with our daughter! We can't wait to return for another enchanting stay in the woods!
