The Button Farm Living History Center is a hands-on education facility dedicated to preserving the history of the Underground Railroad. It is operated by the Menare Foundation through a long term lease agreement with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Several of us who work for the non-profit live in the Button Farm house and share the land with our pigs, geese, chickens and lots of wildlife. We're a close drive to Germantown and all the basic amenities of modern life, but when you come down our drive, you enter a world of natural beauty and rural quiet. When booking, keep in mind that all persons--regardless of age or whether or not they intend to spend the night--must be paid for. Our restroom includes hand sanitizer.

Had a Wonderful Stay
The big field is huge! I think it is stated as 23 acres but it seems even larger. I found it very peaceful. It will accommodate a bunch of people easily so for just me it was great. I didn't have time to hike all the trails nearby but it would be great to come back another time to explore the area over a 2 or 3 night stay in the future. Great host. Great place. Very awesome composting privy... best I've every seen!

Living History + Peace & Quiet.
This is a beautiful peaceful space and such an interesting project that is underway there! Steve and Tony were wonderful, friendly, welcoming, and informative. The geese and hogs are a wonderful addition to the experience. I would absolutely stay here again.

Accessible to town yet there is a quaint and remote feel to the property. The land is gorgeous. Steven is warm, accommodating and communicative. Love this location!

Great for kids!
What a beautiful property! My 2 year old son loved seeing the geese, chickens, and hogs. Tons of room around the farm for groups of any sizes. One tip on navigating there: if Apple Maps tells you you’ve arrived and you can’t find an entrance (happened to us after crossing the bridge), keep driving 200 yards. The entrance will become obvious. Thanks for hosting us! We hope to return
