Grown-up glamping in riverside tipis with views of the Mendip Hills

Wydale Farm Tipis are pitched in an enviable location on the edge of the Mendip Hills, midway between Cheddar and the Somerset seaside. But, be warned, if you stay here you may not explore any of it. I past guests are anything to go by, you may not want to leave this idyllic riverside spot at all. Go out too early and you might miss the chance to spot deer in the surrounding fields, stay out too long and you might miss the sun going down over the hills. And in the middle of the day? Well—that’s the perfect time to take a kayak out on the river.

Even if you spend all of your days right here on Wydale Farm, you won’t be missing out on the beauty of the Mendips or the Somerset Levels. The farm sits on the flat with the foothills of the Western Mendips in an arc giving a 360-degree panorama with Crook Peak foremost in your view. If you can muster the get-up-and-go for a walk, this is the local spot to head for. Ask hosts Sam and Matt for their recommendations on which route to take. It’ll be this lovely couple who welcome you to site when you arrive and walk you the 200 yards from car park to tipi. Anticipation builds step-by-step until you reach the deck and the whole vista is revealed. But it’s not just the surroundings that make this place special; the accommodation itself is also rather nice.

The tipis are a modern take on the classic and are kitted out as swish bedrooms for your stay with no expense spared on beds, mattresses, and bedding. They offer double aspect doors and, at the back, each tipi has a little outbuilding, which offers both a private camp kitchen and a private shower and loo. It’s as comfortable a glamping set-up as you could wish for while out the front is the scenic bit. You have comfortable Adirondack chairs, a lantern-like fire pit and barbecue, and your own outlook on the river—all the way to those Mendip Hills.

Unbelievably amazing, everything you could possibly need was there. Comfy bed, soft plush towels, brilliant shower and loads of space in the bathroom, which is a short distance from the tipi. Kitchen was equipped with just about everything you could need for a short or longer stay. Beautiful views and Sam and Matt are perfect hosts, will definitely come again and highly recommended

Tranquility & Nature at its best!
Wow, I think we found one of those Hipcamp Gems! The perfect couples get away spot, surrounding by so much nature and beauty. Being on the riverside felt so tranquil and peaceful, Matt & Sam had thought of everything perfectly to add to that vibe, including binoculars to watch the local wildlife and some amazing homemade/grow/hatched produce to enjoy whilst sat out on the decking. The tipi itself was beautiful with furnishing that matched the feel of the tipi and nature. Super comfy bed and bedding made our nights sleep just perfect and the kitchen and bathroom amenities were well thought out. All in all this is a perfect glamping spot and we loved our time there, enjoying the nature, reading by the riverside, utilizing the fire pit and having a kayak down the river too.

Fantastic place in a beautiful setting! The facilities here were great - from the spacious tipi itself to the private kitchen and bathroom just metres away. Hosts Matt and Sam were wonderful and couldn’t do enough to help you have an enjoyable stay - I was welcomed with homemade cake and honey and Matt sorted me out with an afternoon of Kayaking along the river in front of the tipi’s. The area has plenty to do and see within reachable distance and is well located for access to Bristol/Bath and the South West. Directions provided were clear and easy to follow, so found the place without any trouble. Would highly recommend and will return!

Wydale Farm Tipis are situated on a unique riverside location. Our three Glamping Tipis and three outbuildings are set within 12 acres of fields with panoramic views of the Mendip Way- an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, AONB. Each Tipi has a quaint outbuilding which provides an open kitchen and bathroom with a showering facility. Our site has multiple activities available such as private access to the river for swimming , fishing (subject to appropriate permits), and kayaking ,(at your own risk ). There are also cycling and hiking trails around the area with easy access points to the Mendip Way. Our tipis are the perfect place to relax amongst nature.
Nearby attractions

Wydale Farm Tipis are set on the Somerset Levels near the village of Loxton with the foothills of the Mendips all around. Crook Peak is the distinctive hill in your view and you can walk to one of the routes to its peak directly from site. The Mendips are a designated Area of Outstnading Natural Beauty, and offer plenty more great walking with the West Mendip Way long-distance footpath not far from here either. But closer even that that is what’s right here on the farm. The glamping site edges the River Axe, which flows by just a few metres from your tipi. There are a couple of kayaks which you are welcome to use (at your own risk) or you’re welcome to use your own. You can also fish in the river, as long as you have the correct licences and permits. The seaside at Weston-Super-Mare is six miles to the west and Cheddar Gorge is six miles to the east. Wells is a half-hour drive away (16 miles).

Food and drink

A welcome pack including Wydale Farm eggs and honey is provided at the start of your stay and for more local produce, you are spoilt for choice with a number of good farm shops nearby. Brent House Farm Shop & Cafe is two miles down the road. The Ploughman’s Farm Shop is another good one and not much further in the same direction. If you’re after Somerset’s favourite tipple, the 10-mile trip to Wilkins Cider farm is worth it – and you can also pick up some local cheese. The closest place for a bite to eat is less than a mile away at the Frankie Howerd Cafe in Loxton (named after the community’s most-famous former resident and set up by a trust in his name). For an evening meal at a good local pub, try The New Inn at Cross or the Brent Knoll Inn (both about four miles away).
