Emmetts on Exmoor is part of the highest farm on the moor, up at an altitude of 1250 feet with gorgeous views out over the surrounding scenery of the national park. You won't find a better place for spotting wildlife right from your tent! Red deer herds regularly frequent the moor which is opposite your pitch. Other wildlife in the area include cuckoos, woodpeckers, golden plovers, foxes and much more! This is a place that’s big on space but small on guest numbers, so there’s always plenty of space around to soak up the rural atmosphere, spot wildlife and play games. It’s worth noting that Exmoor National Park was designated Europe’s first Dark Sky Reserve back in 2011, so you should hopefully be in for spectacular displays of stars by night too. Unsurprisingly, this is a great area for walks and mountain bike rides; other activities in the area include things like fishing, sailing and pony trekking. If you’ve still got any energy left after that little lot, the farm’s all-weather tennis court is available to hire for a game or two. There is a proper shower and loo available next to the car parking area and all pitches are approximately a 500 metre walk away from this area through woodland and across pasture. Remember the site is off-grid so it’s a good idea to remember to bring along a torch. Guests are welcome to bring along a barbecue or hire a firepit and purchase wood onsite. You can also buy fresh free-range eggs from the farm’s hens so a good breakfast should be on the cards too. Exford and Withypool (both within 15 minutes) have good village shops for picking up any other supplies you might need plus tea rooms and pubs. The Poltimore Arms and The Exmoor Forest Inn are two very local pubs that are well worth a visit.

This was the perfect place to camp. We were the only people there all weekend but even if we weren’t the pitches are spaced out enough that you wouldn’t know anyone else was there. The views were beautiful. It was great to have a toilet block too. Will definitely be going back

Semi-wild camping on Exmoor
We had a beautiful night's camping at Emmett's. It is quite a hands-off site, but that suited us. Once we had found the facilities and signage, they were helpful and the instructions to find our spot were clear. Its a 'close-to-wild' site on the outer pastures of the farm with animals around, so its a long walk from the car, but only a short walk from the fells. It was great to have an open fire and some space to ourselves.

Room for improvement, lovely views.
Overall a lovely camping weekend. However, due to excessive rain we have add this year so far, it was extremely boggy so hiking boots/wellies are a must around the site. Would be easily avoidable if a gravel path/drainage/general up keep of the Forrest was done. Owners leave you to it which is good but is a little unorganised when you turn up to find your pitch and get fire wood etc as nobody is around to help. Also no communication through the app so you are better off calling them directly or wandering around until you find someone. There was also a ‘party’ in the main house which was going until about 3am which did take away from the ‘back to nature’ feel. Campsite does have amazing scenery and several lovely dogs! Facilities were good with a proper shower, toilet and sink to wash stuff up which was good. This campsite is perfect for a night or two stay with loads of nice walks near by!

The prefect campsite.
The perfect campsite. Beautiful views, quiet and calm. All the peace of wild camping but without forgoing a warm shower in the morning. Sadly we had to pack up and leave early but that had nothing to do with the campsite and everything to do with the wind, rain and an unfortunately timed bout of the flu. Emmets really is the best of both worlds. We’ll be back when it’s warmer.

Great spot
Great spot for a night’s camping. Nice and quiet surrounded by the moorlands. Found it easy to find, park up and locate our pitch. The toilet and shower room was perfect. We took everything we needed with us so no need to find the owners or worry about nearest shop etc.

The ONS’s constructive review
positive feedback: the environment in which the camp is located was beautiful. However: (fasten your seatbelts, mere reality and harsh truth about to be tossed to your face) - upon arrival, there was no one to be seen, that said we had the luck to stumble upon the owner, who did not seem to give a shit about us (put it in a more formal way: the host did not seem to care about the hosts’ need, like “is there a shower?””) - Indeed, me and my friends found the welcoming petty and lackadaisical, plus with a lack of professionalism regarding the goods we had pre-ordered per mail (Frozen sausages given on the very and only night that we stayed showed a lack of respect and sloth laziness). The least you can do is read your email pal, and answer it. A chance that we’d had the brightness to anticipate and buy additional food ourselves, but think twice, what would others have done with only frozen food to pick from their basket ? - Above all when you’ve got to walk half a mile to reach the location, the least we would expect from a host is that they do not make a fool of their guests . That’s it. I truly hope you at least take 5 minutes to read through those several ‘verses’, and will do a wee bit more elaborate than coming up with your Volvo, grinning as if you’d mock your guests who only booked a “camping” night. This is not a Middle East market where you can swap a camel for 20 pence. Yours truly, The One night standers of Saturday, July 7th 2023.
