A glamping pod with en suite facilities and a hot tub, in the West Sussex countryside just an hour outside London.

As you sit in the hot tub watching the breeze gently rustle the trees that surround Swaynes Pods, it’s easy to understand your place in the world. A few miles north are the scenic Surrey Hills, to the east there’s the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and, closer still, is the South Downs National Park. What’s harder to comprehend is how this green and leafy West Sussex location is so easily reached from London. It’s a commutable hour away; a mere 40 miles from Big Ben. Slip away from the city in this direction and the city soon slips away from you.

Not long after the skyscrapers have receded in the rear-view mirror, you’ll find yourself arriving at Swaynes Pods, waved down by helpful owner Greg. He’ll show you where to park your car then take you across one field into another that’s further from the road transporting you, your luggage and any excited kids in an all-terrain vehicle to your pod. At the moment there’s just the one in a field of several acres.

Space, therefore, is the biggest luxury here though the hot tub comes a close second. Beyond that, there’s something simple about the glamping on offer. Yes, the pod has its own en-suite shower and loo and yes, the beds are made — but there’s nothing too fancy here. The kitchenette is a simple construction, the grain of the curved timber-clad walls is the only decoration and it’s the French doors, not a TV, that are your window on the world. There’s no mains electricity, so power is precious and supplied by batteries and gas. Cooking is on a camping stove or outside on the campfire and, thanks to all this, the essence of camping remains — albeit softened by pillows.

The pod is comfortable for couples but, as it has a sofa bed, there’s room for a couple of kids, too (or for friends who don’t mind sharing). Whether it’s a grown-up getaway or a family affair, the walk to the local pub is a must — especially in spring when part of the way is lined by bluebells. The path that leads there is part of the traffic-free Downs Link cycling and walking route between Guilford and Shoreham-by-Sea. Fishing fans will like the nearby lakes, families will enjoy Fisher’s Farm Park and everyone will enjoy the breath of fresh air that’s afforded by this short hop into the countryside so handily positioned between city and sea.

Pod is 4x4 meters. Small kitchenette with cooking utensils and nice hot showers with clean flushable toilets are inside the Pod.A double bed and fold out futon is provided. Outside there's a set of table and chairs under a well built metal gazebo so you can still enjoy the outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Also a BBQ, fire pit and wood fired hot tub is provided for guests use.

FANTASTIC!
Not only was Greg a fantastic host but this was the perfect little get away! Comfable living space with hot shower cooking equipment and let's not forget the hottub! Hottub heated up fast. Was expecting it to take quite a few hours but heated up VERy quickly. All in all an absolutely fantastic experience that we will definitely be coming back to!

Glamping in style!
We had a great stay at Greg’s glamping pod - enough room for 2 adults and 2 kid sleeping on the futon. It had everything we needed for a fun few days (generator-powered fridge, gas camping stoves, fire pit, gazebo for the morning it was raining)- and the wood fired hot tub was fun! Greg was a very welcoming host and organised everything we needed.

Love it!
This is a brilliant place to stay all round - so peaceful and within walking reach of local pubs, trails and local shop. The log fired hot tub worked very well and we even had a visit from 2 small deer!

Set in beautiful, secluded surroundings, our glamping pod is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday. The pod is perfectly situated for long country walks, relaxing views and reconnecting with friends and family around the firepit. Finish off the evening with a glass of fizz in the hot tub, gazing at the stars.
Nearby attractions
The Downs Link cycle route/bridleway passes right through the field you stay in and provides an excellent way to walk into the village of Rudgwick where you can visit the local pub or pick up campsite supplies. You can also use it for longer bike rides into the countryside (and mountain bike hire is available as an optional extra here). The full route links Guildford (about 15 miles to the north of sea) and Shoreham-by-Sea (25 miles to the south). There's fishing just over a mile from site at Furnace Lakes Fishery and family fun at Fishers Farm Park (01403 700063), six miles from site. The edge of the South Downs National Park is about 10 miles from site with RSPB Pulborough Brooks (01798 875851) just within it. Winkworth Arboretum (01483208477) is also around 10 miles away within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are plenty of lovely Sussex and Surrey villages to visit nearby and south coast beaches are about a 45-minute drive away at Shoreham and Worthing.
Food and drink
The King's Head (01403 822200) in Rudgwick village is a mile-and-a-half on the road, less if you walk via the Downs Link which passes through the field, great for drinks and pub grub. The Chequers Inn (01403 790480) Rowhook, three miles from site, offers a more extensive menu and Sir Roger Tichborne (01403 751873) is another lovely country pub that's recommended for food.
