Friendly camping and glamping on a Sussex farm, with animals to meet, a pond to swim in, and the South Downs nearby.

Welcome to the farm. Along with ample wildlife, ancient woodland and animals, including pigs, goats, and Highland cows, Cattlestone Farm’s 60 acres is also home to a superb little campsite that's garnered quite the reviews since it first opened. "Friendliest owners ever!" reads one. "One of the best campsites I've ever been to", says another. And, er, "best loo with a view", is a frequent comment heard. In fact, Cattlestone Farm doesn't have some hidden secret. Hosts, Donna and Alan, just love what they do and know how to get it right. And it shows. It's surely one of the greatest campsites near the South Downs.

Set in the West Sussex countryside, guests can pitch a tent or pull up their motorhome in a sprawling wildflower meadow, surrounded by ancient woodland. Facilities are clean and well-maintained – showers, a toilet block, a washing-up area, and a decent WiFi connection to boot. And there are glamping options in an entirely separate area of the farm if you don't want to camp: Boho-style bell tents provide pre-pitched charm, while a quaint shepherd’s hut is ideal for romantic getaways (the glamping area has private bathroom facilities and an outdoor kitchen).

There are some wonderful touches here to make the site feel like a home away from home. Breakfast and barbecue hampers can be ordered (cook on the firepit that's provided), and although mammoth group bookings aren't allowed, glamping families can book additional single mattresses or small bell tents to sit alongside their own. It's ideal for bringing the kids away with you.

For days out, the boundary of the South Downs National Park is less than 10 minutes away and there are good footpaths near the farm. Take a stomp along the West Sussex Literary Trail, visit a local or vineyard or drive to the gorgeous market town of Petworth, a hub of independent retailers and restaurants. Or for a day at the beach, make your way to the nearby seaside town of Worthing, its award-winning pier providing great views along the coast.

Luxury Sunrise Shepherd's Cabin
We had a lovely time staying here. The shepherd's hut was attractive, cosy and well equipped. Because we stayed at the end of October we unfortunately didn't make use of all the outside seating, which would be lovely in summer. So once it gets dark, it is very quiet and isolated, so just be prepared to cosy up inside with books etc. In the daytimes we liked exploring the local villages and some amazing pubs on our bikes.

Luxury Sunrise Shepherd's Cabin
We will be returning very soon.
Exceptional trip away, Donna and her partner were incredibly welcoming throughout. Sunrise included local luxuries of fresh bread, eggs, milk and cake. The bathroom was fully kitted out with everything we needed. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the unit was beautifully decorated and furnished throughout. The outside bathtub, fire pit and hammock will become a feature of our next trip in the warmer months. The BEST thing of all though (for us) were the Highland Cows that were just across the field. They were lovely to visit throughout the day and we were able to give them lots of stokes and brushes. Stanley the Bull was by far our favourite, he’s a great gentle giant. We are hoping to book again for early next year and can see Sunrise becoming our new favourite long weekend away. Thank you so much!

Cattlestone Farm meadow tent pitch
Lovely and super organised!
Beautiful pitch with great facilities including proper toilets, warm showers and a little freezer with ice packs to borrow was a lovely touch. Highly organised with allocated rows and pitches, little car park and totally for stuff. Newly segregated lux bell tent area and regular camping was a noted development but still managed to see the goats Gin and Tonic and the gorgeous piggies and highland cows!

We are an Adult Only campsite set in 60 acres, our 8 acre while flower meadow and 5 acre glamping field are the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of life and just relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility. The farm is fringed by woodland and we have an abundance of wildlife as well as our Highland Cows, 2 lovely pigs, pygmy goats and chickens. There are four spotless flushing toilets and showers, together with a double hand wash station, washing up and a freezer for your freezer blocks. We ask you please to bring your own toilet roll.
Nearby attractions

The South Downs National Park is only a 10-minute drive from the site, packed with plenty to do for ramblers, cyclists, and those looking for good food and independent shops. Put on your walking boots and explore the famous South Downs Way, a 100-mile hilly route lined with pubs providing a drink and hearty meal along your journey. Also a 10-minute drive, Southwater Country Park is a great day out for the kids, with a beautiful lake that hosts plenty of watersports such as kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and rowing boats. Fishers Farm Park is another excellent family attraction reachable within a 10-minute drive; this family-run farm lets the little ones interact with a wide selection of animals and also boasts a bunch of other activities such as a soft play area, splash zone, and rides.

Food and drink

The Blacksmiths Arms is a 5-minute drive away, which also houses the '10/10 Restaurant' – well-known locally for its delicious combination of authentic Italian food and pub classics.  The Rising Sun is a 16th-century traditional pub a 10-minute drive away in the pleasant village of Nutbourne, immediately noticeable due to its impressive ivy-covered exterior. There's a menu of pub classics and real ales here, with a shaded beer garden for the summer and regular live music. The Curry Lounge is also 10 minutes away, an Indian restaurant in Ashington that's widely regarded as one of the best of its kind in this region. The jumbo king prawns come highly recommended.
