Grown-up pod glamping on a woodland site in Lancashire

The three pods at Trawden Forest Glamping in the Lancashire countryside are named after characters from The Lord of the Rings – and, once you arrive, you see how appropriate that is. These curved, timber-clad boltholes, Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf, are as cute as something from The Shire in JRR Tolkein’s tales. And their setting is almost as magical: a little clearing in the middle of a seven-acre wood that was planted by your hosts. It’s home to hedgehogs, deer, woodland birds – and, for a few days if you decide to book, to you and whoever you've come with.

Each pod is an en suite, self-catering hideaway for two. It’s adults only and dog free which makes it a tranquil place to stay both for wildlife and for glamping guests. It’s a hundred-metre walk along winding pathways through the trees from where you park your car to where you find your pod. It makes arriving at Bilbo, Frodo or Gandalf even more exciting. Inside each is a single living space with your double bed and kitchenette, which features fridge, oven and hob. The bathroom is just as modern with a rainfall shower, flushing loo and heated towel rack. It’s insulated with sheep wool and centrally heated too. But when it’s chilly outside – how about heading to the Hobbit Hut? This fourth hut is a shared facility: a barbecue hut that’s even cuter and cosier than the others. It has an open fire and a chimney in the middle and a veranda with great views outside.

The surrounding countryside tempts you to explore and Boulsworth Hill, which forms part of the vista, is the obvious place for a walk. Head to the peak for views across the area or, for a gentler walk, skirt its lower slopes on the Brontё Way to reach Wycoller village, the local pub and the remains of a grand house, Wycoller Hall. It was one of the settings for Charlotte Brontё’s, Jane Eyre. There’s plenty more you could do in this area of moors, hills and market towns but you might be happy to stay right here and relax among the trees of your forest hideaway.

Amazing stay! Mark and Angie have thought about everything to make this a great stay. Not a single complaint, always quick to respond to all questions and even suggested things for us to do over our stay. The place is gorgeous, will defiantly come again. Thankyou!

Gandalf Pod
Relaxing break
We had a lovely couple of days in the Gandolf pod. It’s very well kitted out, clean, has a fabulous shower, and we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay. For those who disturbed by the light, there is no blind on the velux window although eye masks are provided. All in all a wonderful break.

Frodo Pod
Above and beyond expectations
Above and beyond expectations, cleanliness, equipment, warmth, comfort. Lovely smell of pine on entry. Peaceful location. Would love to try out the fire pit in the hobbit hut some time.

Set in seven acres of woodland nestling at the foot of Boulsworth hill and nearby historic village of Wycoller, you have the enviable opportunity to enjoy the unique tranquillity and relaxation of three luxury pods, a barbeque hut and the surrounding wild life and countryside. This is a quiet site and due to the wildlife and challenging terrain unfortunately, children and pets are not allowed. Each pod Bilbo, Frodo and Gandalf house two guests and are sited individually in small clearings set in the woodland, giving you your own personal privacy and space. Each pod comprises of a spacious living and sleeping area with a luxury en suite. Outside you have your own veranda with table and chairs along with a bbq station for a disposable bbq. The pods are heavily insulated with sheep's wool and have central heating making them an all year round destination. The living space comprises of a luxury double bed, futon, fully equipped kitchenette and a dining table. The en suite offers a large rain forest shower with hand held facility in case you do not want to get your hair wet!, WC, wash basin and mirror, heated towel rail, hair dryer and shaver point. Outside along with a bbq is a fire pit, fuel is supplied for a charge but you are welcome to bring your own disposable bbq and kiln dried logs. Bedding and fluffy towels are supplied. A futon provides a relaxing space whilst offering a bed for singles if needed. The kitchenette comprises of sink, gas hob, oven with grill and a full size fridge with small freezer compartment. These are fully equipped with pans, crockery, utensils and complimentary tea, coffe and sugar. The pods are partially off grid so there are two USB points (no WFI but 5G signal) for rechargable devices but no plug sockets. There is full lighting in and outside and a key safe outside to gain entry. A car park with individual places is situated 110 m from the pods and a wheelbarrow is supplied to help with luggage and essentials if needed. Mobile phones are necessary as there are no phones available on site and also torches if arriving in the dark, as the path to the pods is not lit. Village shop, pub and cafe only a 15 min walk away or a 2 min drive.
Nearby attractions

There are plenty of good walking routes which you can tackle straight from the glamping site, without having to get in the car. Your hosts Mark and Angie provide a guestbook with ideas for local walks including a short walk to a nearby waterfall and a  longer, hike to the top of Boulsworth Hill. Wycoller village (one mile) is another worthy destination for a walk and can be reached on local footpaths or the Bronte and Pendle Ways. There. The ruins of Wycoller Hall are a link to the Brontё’s as it was a setting in Jane Eyre. If you’re interested in literary history, head for Haworth and their former home which is now the Brontё Parsonage Museum (12 miles). It’s a similar distance, in other directions, to the lovely market town of Hebden Bridge, to Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales or to Pendle Hill in the Forest of Bowland.

Food and drink

The community-owned Trawden Arms is the obvious place to head to for drinks or dinner. It’s a walkable mile from site, just a couple of minutes in the car, and has an open fire when it's chilly and a garden that's great when the sun shines. It offers good food and often has entertainment on too. There’s a community shop there as well which can supply you with all the basics you’ll need for your stay but if you want a choice of independent shops and supermarkets, head for the market town of Colne (four miles). And if you want a bite to eat while you’re there, Tubbs of Colne is the recommended spot for a meal out. Closer to site, other local inns that get the thumbs up from your hosts are The Emmott Arms and Alma Inn, both between three and four miles from Trawden Forest Glamping.
