Year-round yurt stays in a private meadow on the Somerset Levels

A single yurt in a Somerset meadow filled with wildflowers, herbs and apple trees makes up Ashmeadow Private Yurt Retreat. The place is all yours for your stay which sounds rather luxurious doesn’t it? But this is a Somerset level of luxury. You won’t be quaffing Champagne in the hot tub (there isn’t one); more likely sipping local cider by the fire after a day exploring nearby Glastonbury Tor.

The glamping here is designed to help you relax in nature and immerse you in rural Somerset life, all year round. In spring the trees and hedgerows surrounding this exclusive-hire acre are covered in blossom. In summer the wildflowers come alive with butterflies and bees and there’s activity on the farm next door. In early autumn, the apples on the trees and nearby cider farms ripen and, as winter approaches, murmurations of starlings begin to appear overhead. You’ll be grateful of the log burner at this time of year. It easily warms the 18-foot space you’ll be sleeping in. There’s a double bed and a futon sofa so the space is great for couples and big enough for families too. And you’re welcome to bring the dog.

The yurt and its surroundings are not a bells and bunting place. It’s more rustic than that with eclectic vintage and handbuilt pieces among the furniture, fittings and amenities. You can cook on a two ring gas stove in the yurt but those who will like it here are more likely to favour the fire pit outside. The compost loo is also out there. Life seems to necessarily slow down here. And that’s the best way to enjoy this off-grid retreat.

You may take a trip out to Glastonbury, just nine miles away, or to the even closer Avalon Marshes. Perhaps you’ll cycle to Bere Cider farm, visit Langport to paddleboard on the River Parrett or head further to explore Cheddar Gorge. All this is easily reached and well worth exploring but you might just find that the best bit of your Somerset stay will be when you’re back here at your own private yurt retreat.

A spacious and beautiful 18ft Yurt fully insulated with felted wool lining and locally made wood burner and basket of logs, in a corner of a private secluded meadow with orchard and medicinal herb garden on the edge of the Somerset Levels. Relax and re-connect with nature. The energy here is very nourishing. This is your own private space overlooking the Vale of Avalon. Surrounded by birds, butterflies and wildflowers.  On the edge of a rural farming village, close to ancient oak woodland and RSPB reserves. Within easy reach of Glastonbury.  The yurt is spacious and comfortable, with a king sized bed and additional double futon mattress with full bedding and towels provided. There is a double ring cast iron gas hob inside the yurt, along with an array of kitchen utensils, pans etc and a set of cast iron cooking implements (including a dutch oven, skillet and frying pan) if you choose to cook outside on the fire pit. Plenty of extra wood is available on site.  If the weather is good, lounging outside surrounded by the fruit trees and listening to the birds is heavenly. Or snuggle inside beside the fire, on sheepskins and rugs or under the wool duvet. In colder months I provide loads of extra covers, hot water bottles and two thick duvets, along with plenty of wood. Super cosy!  Sleeping in a yurt is a treat. The comfortable bed is underneath the large clear covered crown, where you can view the stars and sky. There is very little light pollution here and it is nestled in a corner but on a high ridge so clear night skies are stunning. I grow medicinal herbs at the top of the field.  The compost toilet is clean and fresh and a pleasure to use !  The area is perfect for hiking, paddle boarding on the River Parrat, Cycling, simply relaxing in the meadow and taking time out in nature or visiting the famous Glastonbury, Wells and Cheddar.  High Ham is a small farming village on top of a high hill with stunning walks all around from woodland walks to open spaces with incredible views and nature reserves. Langport offer boat and paddle board hire. Spend the day exploring footpaths around the levels, visit the Sweet Track at Avalon Marsh Centre and RSPB reserves nearby. There are plenty of walking maps and books provided.  Visit Pitney Organic Farm shop and cafe and The Bere Cider Company, both 5 minutes from your Yurt. I recommend eating at The Halfway House in Pitney.

Ashmead Meadow Yurt Retreat
The yurt is a peaceful haven with comfy beds, a wood stove, gas burners and a small kitchen. Everything you need for a fun experience. My gripe is the electricity and the lights switching off at 8.30 both evenings and being plunged into darkness. The first day had been murky but the second day had been lush and sunny so the battery should have charged up. I thought I would be able to charge my phone but that was not the case.

Ashmead Meadow Yurt Retreat
We had a fantastic few days at the yurt. It was beautifully presented and Melissa had thought of everything. The orchard was filled with various meadow flowers, apple, plum trees and it was lovely hearing the sound from the crickets. Very comfortable bed and amazing to wake up seeing the sky above you. Close by is the tranquil River Parrett which was so peaceful to paddle board along. We would definitely recommend as an escape from the hustle and bustle of life and are looking forward to visiting again.

Ashmead Meadow Yurt Retreat
Ashmead was one of the most spectacular places we’ve ever stayed! The meadow is gorgeous and the bees were so lovley to watch. Just the peaceful, nature-centered stay we needed! Inside was cosy and had everything we needed to cook and more. Doggies were wild and happy, we felt so secure with them running around. Cannot wait to stay there again!

A spacious, beautiful off grid 18ft, locally handmade Ash yurt. Cosy at night, with woodburner, felt insulation, insulated raised flooring and 12v solar lighting. King sized bed and a double futon if needed for additional guests. I provide bedding, bed linen, towels, a range of kitchen equipment, indoor gas hob, a large basket of logs, eco cleaning products etc. There is a selection of cast iron cooking pans etc great for cooking outside round the fire. Private pleasant compost toilet. Private yoga sessions can be prior arranged. Message for details. A magical place to retreat with a special energy. You have private use of the one acre site. Enclosed by mature hedging and trees it feels wild and natural yet is easy to access. The yurt is at the top of the meadow, in the wild herb garden. There is an outside fire space with benches and picnic table. The site is close to a working farm. Sometimes you may hear the two neighbouring properties. A small country road runs alongside the land. The meadow is situated on the edge of the village, on a ridge with fantastic views of the Somerset levels, Glastonbury Tor and the Vale of Avalon. Nice walks locally, particularly at the National Trusts Turn Hill/Aller woods, include a visit to a Bere Cider 5 mins drive away. The Kings Arms is a short walk from the field , with great views over the Avalon Vale. Pitney has an organic farm shop, wonderful organic farm cafe and good county pub for food. Langport offers interesting shops, cafes, River Parrat boat/bike/stand up paddle board/kayak hire. Nearby are the RSPB reserves Ham Wall and Westhay and Avalon Marsh Centre. known for the large starling murmuration's. Glastonbury has many attractions including the Abbey, Tor, Challice Well and White Temple Springs as well as alternative shops, pubs and cafes. There are beautiful National Trust properties a short drive away as well as Muchelney Abbey, The Newt, and Wells Cathedral as well as Cheddar Gorge, the Blackdown Hills and The Quantock Hills. The ruined church on Burrow Mump and Burrow Hill/Cider are interesting landmarks to visit and the drive across the levels into Muchelney often offers views of swans on the floodplains. The area is very rural, you need a vehicle. Good cycle routes and paddle boarding site nearby.
Nearby attractions

Private yoga sessions with a local instructor can be booked in advance of your stay at Ashmead Private Yurt Retreat. The yurt is on the edge of the village of High Ham from where there are some good walks with great views including at Turn Hill and Aller Woods (two miles away). The town of Langport is about four miles from the retreat and a nice place to explore with shops, eateries and a riverside setting. You can launch paddleboards from here – and if you don’t have your own, there’s hire available if booked in advance. Muchelney Abbey (five miles), Burrow Mump (six miles) and Glastonbury Tor (10 miles) are all prominent landmarks on the Somerset Levels landscape, each worth a visit. The town of Glastonbury (nine miles) is also a popular place to explore with its alternative shops, cafes and sacred sites including Glastonbury Abbey, the Chalice Well and White Spring. Treatments and spa days are also available at The Middlewick in Glastonbury. Cheddar is about 17 miles from site, a drive of just over half an hour, and about the same distance in the other direction you can visit the lovely gardens at The Newt. For nature, you are spoilt for choice with RSPB Ham Wall (six miles) and Avalon Marshes (seven miles) both excellent places to visit.

Food and drink

The closest pub is The Kings Head Inn, a short walk away in High Ham but for food The Halfway House in Pitney (four miles) is recommended. The village also has a good farm shop with a cafe. For more local produce, there’s plenty of cider available with three cider farms within a five-minute drive or pleasant cycle. Bere Cider (just over two miles away) is the closest. In Langport The Kitchen at the Wharf comes recommended by your host as does The Rose and Crown in Huish Episcopi (four miles) which has live music on Fridays with visiting food trucks too.
