A shepherd’s hut with a hot tub in a private woodland in Devon

It’s not hard to relax with a spot of Slow Glamping at Tillislow Farm. The whole place has been designed with relaxation in mind. It’s a single shepherd’s hut with a hot tub tucked away in a one acre woodland surrounded by nature instead of neighbours. It’s off grid and without wifi, the kind of place where you can sit back and read, play a game of cards, or simply do nothing at all. And once the stresses and strains of daily life have melted away, you might venture out from your woodland hideaway to see what’s out and about. Tillislow Farm is in rural Devon almost equidistant between Dartmoor and the county’s north coast. Both are within 20 miles: close enough to visit on day trips, far enough to ignore if you want to stay put and simply relax.

The shepherd’s hut looks the part and has an authentic feel. It’s a simple space that’s clad in wavy tin and warmed by a log-burner inside. There’s space for sitting and sleeping with a flushing loo and a sink as well. For everything else you’ll need to step outside. This glade within the trees contains the hot tub, an outdoor shower, a fire pit, your dining table, and a kitchen that’s cleverly sheltered in a converted farm silo. It’s simple, stylish and rustically, luxuriously outdoorsy; a space that’s all yours to share only with the woodland wildlife.

You can wander the woodland and the wider farm at your leisure, even popping down to the River Carey for a wild swim if you want to. It’s a short drive to Strawberry Fields Farm Shop and PYO if you want some wholesome goodies for lunch or dinner but if you don’t want to cook there are nearby pubs serving food. Walking and cycling are great ways to explore the countryside at a slower pace here and Dartmoor National Park offers plenty of places to escape the crowds. But sea air is an option too, with some of Devon’s best beaches just half an hour’s drive away.

Slow glamping shepherds hut
What a place!
Don’t think twice and just book, we had THE BEST 3 nights exploring and got tubbing in this beautifully private oasis. Jess and John were really helpful pre-trip sourcing a wild swimming online book for the area which was going above and beyond to ensure we had the best stay. Can’t wait to come back!

Escape to Devon and enjoy the luxury of our shepherds hut & hot tub. We're not your average campsite. Our family farm is 350 acres, here you’ll have your own private woodland during your stay. Take a dip in the wood fire hot tub, use the outdoor shower and chill with a glass of wine next to the fire pit. We’ve kitted out an old farm silo and made it a unique outdoor kitchen with all the essentials. The shepherds hut has a double bed fitted, indoor flushing loo and sink. It also has a wood burner to keep you cosy during winter. It's fully insulated and has lighting, as well as plugs so you can charge your phones. The woodland itself is all yours during your stay. it's a native copse (small woodland) which is under 1 acre. There's a stream which runs through the copse, at the entrance a small bridge connects the field to the woods. Tillislow Farm is over 350-acres which includes the main farm, woodlands, streams and ofcourse Slow Glamping. The farm has been run by the same family (Hopper's) for a century. Today it's managed by Jon’s uncle (David) and dad (Michael). Previously a dairy farm, now they rear beef cattle and grow wheat and barley. There’s plenty to discover for fellow nature lovers. If you want to venture further than the campsite, you can head down to the farm yard - please bear in mind it’s a working farm so keep an eye out for tractors, machinery and livestock. If you continue further on, you’ll end up in Tillislow wood. The ancient woodland is teaming with wildlife - if you’re lucky you might spot a deer. Follow the path (an old railway track) which runs alongside the river and you’ll come across the quarry, a little further is a bridge. This is our favourite place on the farm to walk. For the very brave, enjoy a refreshing dip in the River Carey.
Nearby attractions

You can go for a long walk without even leaving Tillislow Farm as guests are welcome to wander the 350-acre family farm that the hut is based on. Other places for a walk include Roadford Lake (four miles) where there’s also good cycling and watersports, and Meldon Reservoir which is on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. Lydford Gorge is another hotspot with a 30-foot waterfall for added interest. The Granite Way offers traffic-free cycling between Meldon and Lydford too. The coast is just under 20 miles away with Bude offering surf, sand, swimming and facilities.

Food and drink

The Village Inn in Ashwater (two miles) is the closest pub to site and offers good quality pub food. A similar distance in the other direction, and walkable during the day, is The Pint and Post (three miles) offering traditional pub grub under a thatched roof. For something a bit more fancy, try The Arundell restaurant in Lifton (five miles) or The Dartmoor Inn in Lydford (13 miles). If you’re on the beach at Bude for the day, Electric Bakery is a good option for lunch and The Deck is a good place to refuel at dinner time. If you want to cook for yourselves back on site, you can pick up local produce from Strawberry Fields Farm Shop in Lifton (five miles) – though you might be tempted to eat at their cafe whilst there. More shops and supermarkets can be found in Launceston (seven miles).
