A simple campsite 10-minutes’ drive from Combe Martin

This campsite, close to the North Devon Coast and the edge of Exmoor, offers the simplest of pleasures. At Long Moor Farm, it’s all about camping in a good location with clean facilities and a friendly host. It’s simple stuff but it’s enough to keep campers coming back. And it’s dog and campfire friendly too. Book yourself in for a stay and you’ll soon be enjoying days exploring the North Devon Coast and nights back on the farm. As you sit by the campfire, we predict there’ll only be one topic of conversation – planning the date of your return.

With space for 100 tents, campervans, or caravans, this is not a small campsite, so it’s a blessing that it’s in a big field. As a result, pitches are spacious at 10 by 12 metres a piece. They are marked only by mown pathways and reached by a handy hard-standing track round the field. More than half have electric hook up and all have access to the facilities: timber-clad cubicles for flushing toilets and hot water showers alongside undercover outdoor sinks. They are clustered together in a little facilities yard, giving the place an almost festival feel – but, crucially, they are kept immaculately clean. The other thing that deserves a mention here is the honesty shop, which campers all seem to love. Friendly owner Rocky, seems to have thought of everything you might need here from locally-produced ice cream to logs.

There’s a kids’ play area on site and lovely views (especially at sunset), but really and truly it’s likely you’re here to explore. The closest beach, Combe Martin is about a 10-minute drive away but there are plenty more to choose from. It’s only nine miles, for example, to the surf and family-friendly sands of Woolacombe, one of the best beaches in the UK. In the other direction, the wilds of Exmoor continue for 30-ish miles.

Great
This is a well laid out site. Access is good, the camp is just off a good road and is well sign posted. There is plenty of space, many pitched have electric. The honesty shop is well stocked. There are plenty of showers and toilets and they are kept clean. The showers had a good strong flow and the water was always hot. There are benches and fire pits available for free. Rocky is around to help when needed. You need a car to get around. On the whole a great site.

From the host
From cliffs and combes to dazzling sandy coves… charter new territories from Long Moor Farm Camping. On the edge of Exmoor National Park and 5 minutes’ drive from the sandy Combe Martin beaches, this dog-friendly site opens the door to a long list of Devon adventures, from cliff railways to bubbling surf and family-friendly zoos and wildlife parks. If you need to keep warm, hire a firepit and make the most of the starry skies (no generators allowed on site, please). This site is all geared up for wild camping with a basic amenities block, hot showers and dishwashing area, and sloping countryside on all sides. If you fancy a stretch of your legs first thing in the morning, take a wander around the site's 15 acres of grounds. Based 5 minutes’ drive outside of Combe Martin, this site is well-positioned for fishing down at the bay or hiring a paddleboard or kayak for waves further out. If the scent of fish and chips is calling your name, try out the local seafood in one of the restaurants in the harbour. And when you fancy just a small snack or something to take back with you, there are plenty of shops and ice cream parlours in the town. Heading out for food straight from the site? There are several pubs including a dog-friendly inn on the old Lynton to Barnstaple railway, within five minutes’ drive of the site (and a cider and farm shop within walking distance too).
Nearby attractions

The Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park is the closest attraction, just two miles away. A mile or so beyond is the little village of Combe Martin and the shingley beach backed by cliffs is just a little further. You can join the South West Coast Path here for coastal walks too. The west-facing Woolacombe beach is nine miles away and a good destination for a day out on the beach whether you want to build sandcastles or go for a surf – and there are plenty more in between. In the other direction, Lynton, Lynmouth and the Valley of the Rocks are a scenic 11-mile drive. You can stop off for a ride on the steam trains Lynton and Barnstaple Railway hopping aboard at Woody Bay Station (seven miles) and there’s more history at the National Trust’s Arlington Court and the National Carriage Museum, less than five miles from site.

Food and drink

The on-site honesty shop has local goodies, including cheese and meat for the barbecue. For more, there are plenty of farm shops in the near vicinity (ask Rocky for tips) but there’s also a choice of shops in Combe Martin village, three miles away, where The Pack O’ Cards pub is recommended for food. Out of town, The Pyne Arms, three miles south in East Down, serves good food in a family-run pub.
