The folk at Nature's Nest refer to their four safari tents as 'canvas cottages', and it's not difficult to see why this name change felt appropriate. Situated in the small village of Ballingham within the vast countryside surrounding the River Wye, these glamping constructions represent the peak of luxury camping. To call them tents at all feels as though you're doing them a disservice—what kind of tent boasts a dining table for six within, let alone a hot tub on its decking?

These are as far removed from pitching your own tent in the mud as you can get, and tick as many boxes possible on the 'glamping must-haves' list. The aforementioned outdoor hot tubs are a no-brainer requirement for those looking to properly unwind, with a view across to the rising Hereford woodland from your seat among the bubbles. Inside, it's all cottage-chic and cosy seating, with up to six places to sleep for friends and family. Unlike many similar glamping spots, Nature's Nest also allows for exclusive hire of its four tents for suitable groups if you have the numbers to fill them.

But outside of the hot tub and decidedly un-tent-like accommodation, the biggest selling point of Nature's Nest is how well-equipped it is for exploring the nearby River Wye and its surrounding footpaths and cycle routes. E-bikes can be hired on-site for a swift ride to the Wye and around nearby villages like Carey—which also just so happens to house your local pub, and you can pick up an inflatable stand-up paddleboard if you want to get a real close look at the river. If the point of glamping is to take the hassle and fuss out of camping, then Nature's Nest is near enough the epitome of it.

Outstanding glamping
Outstanding glamping site. We have stayed in safari tents half a dozen times and this was the best one by far. Everything is thought of. It was so comfortable, peaceful and fun. Steph is a wonderful host and we can't wait to go back.

Nature’s Nest
We absolutely loved staying at Nature’s Nest. Great peaceful location with amazing views. Safari tent was spacious and well equipped and really comfortable. Kids loved toasting marshmallows on the fire pit and relaxing in the hot tub as well as swimming in the river. Hosts were really welcoming and friendly. Would highly recommend.

We loved our stay at Nature’s Nest. The site was so peaceful with beautiful views. The safari tents were very comfortable with everything we needed and more. We enjoyed hiring the paddle boards down on the river in the sunshine.

The site is a two-minute walk from the River Wye, which visitors can enjoy on foot, bike, or even in the water itself. Inflatable stand-up paddleboards are available for hire from the site. You can also bring your own canoe with you, or book from one of the local rental companies such as Hereford Canoe Hire (01432 873020). Six e-bikes are also available to hire from the site, or you can hire from Symonds Yat Bike Hire (07391 162903), a 25-minute drive with trails all around the River Wye and Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint. A fishing pass can be bought from the site, with two licences available for £20 each. For families, 'the aMazing Hedge Puzzle' maze is a 25-minute drive away in Symonds Yat, while on the same site you'll also find the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (01600 890360) and Miniature Golf. Or, in just under a 40-minute drive from the site, test your might at The Viking Games (01981 240896), where you can enjoy Nordic-themed fun such as axe-throwing, archery or, somewhat incongruously, paintball.

Food and drink

The Cottage of Content (01432 840242) is just over a 15-minute walk away from the site, a classic country pub set in beautiful surroundings serving high-quality food, all in the neighbouring village of Carey. The New Harp Inn (01432 840900) has a brook running through its garden, with a large alfresco dining area to boot where you can enjoy a beer from one of the various regional and local micro-breweries. As its name suggests, the Riverside Bar and Eatery (07717 882899) is set alongside the River Wye, providing home-cooked breakfast, lunch and evening meals alongside freshly-grounded coffee, plus a selection of local cider and ales.
