Shepherd’s hut glamping near Hadrian’s Wall and the Solway Firth.

Want to go glamping near the western end of Hadrian’s Wall Path? The Garrison Shepherd’s Huts are where you should be headed. These self-contained huts are the closest glamping accommodation to the start of the national trail in Bowness-on-Solway. They're also parked up on the site of a Roman fort that once marked the northern boundary to the Roman Empire. In short, there's nowhere more appropriate to spend a night or two if you’re exploring Hadrian’s Wall and the heritage of the area.

There are four different huts at this Hipcamp, all situated in a former farm courtyard, in the very middle of the village. Each of them offers self-contained accommodation for up to three people. Book a stay and you don’t have to worry about bringing much at all. Beds are made, towels provided, and each has its own en-suite shower and loo as well as a simple kitchenette. Although the facilities are all there to self cater, you may not need to use it; as the on-site Garrison Bistro serves up food at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Each hut has a double bed with a single bunk above—so they're best suited to a couple, a family of three, or perhaps two friends about to tackle the walk or cycle across the country, west to east. But this is also a great stopping off point for people travelling north to south, as Bowness-on-Solway is very much a border village. Stand on the river bank and you are looking across the Solway Firth to Scotland. Gretna Green is 20 miles away from here, just a little further than Carlisle with its castle, cathedral, and riverside parks. All worthy places to visit.

A perfect place to stay!
What a beautiful, stand-out place to stay! Complete with gym, resturant (great pie!) and even a museum, we would highly recommend staying here and we already look forward to returning again soon!

These quirky shepherd huts sit in the tranquil old orchard at Bowness House Farm. The site is named ‘Garrison’ as it sits on the former Roman Fort of Maia, a world heritage site at the end of Hadrian’s Wall. The shepherd huts are rustic but equipped with all modern amenities, this is glamping at its very best. Why not take the time to sit back and enjoy the peaceful surroundings in the garden, light the wood burning stove and relax on the the site of the second largest fort on the Roman Wall.
Nearby attractions

Garrison Shepherd’s Huts are in the heart of the village of Bowness-on-Solway just a hundred yards or so from the start of Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail and right on the Hadrian’s Cycleway (Sustrans Route 72). There's a visitor centre on site with a model of the Roman fort of Maia which was once on this site. It was the second largest fort on Hadrian's Wall. As such the huts are a great place for anyone setting out on or finishing this 84-mile long-distance trail. Or, perhaps, just as a base if you like walking as the well-signposted route can be used for shorter walks on the Solway coast which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is well-known for birdwatching with wading birds including curlews, oystercatchers and redshanks often spotted. Bowness is 15 miles from Carlisle with its historic castle, open to visitors thanks to English Heritage. Its 20 miles south of Gretna Green in Scotland and 20 miles north of the Lake District – so both are possible day trips from here.

Food and drink

The Garrison Bistro on the same site as the Garrison Shepherd’s Huts, serves simple meals. You can pre-order evening meals and breakfasts too (at an extra charge). There’s also a small shop where you can buy a few basics and excellent ice cream. The village pub, The King’s Arms, serves home-cooked food a few doors away and there’s Pear Tree Tea Room for tea, cake and light lunches.
