A quiet, summer-only campsite with campfires in the heart of the Devon countryside, enjoying panoramic views towards Dartmoor

It seems strange to say that Holsome Park Camping is a place for night owls. With its prime location 10 miles from the coast, the endless footpaths directly from its boundary, and the family-friendly vibe of the whole place, you’d expect us to call it a site for sunny days. True as this may be, though, the wealth of attractions on the doorstep mean it’s easy to spend very little daytime here at all!

The reason, however, we so love this place at night, is the seclusion of it all. Perched on the perfectly flat top of a gentle hill, in the heart of the Devon countryside, Holsome Park Camping is a spectacular spot for that late evening light. As the August sun comes to the end of each day, it sits like an orange orb in the open space opposite the site – Dartmoor National Park, an endless stretch of green that rolls into the distance and bathes in a warming glow as the sun sets. The odd evening barbecue sends a white wisp of smoke across the sky, birds taking roost twitter the occasional sound into the night, but otherwise the campsite is quiet and serene. In short, it’s peaceful, rural bliss.

When morning comes there’s still plenty to sing and dance about. The campsite, with space for around 30 unmarked pitches, is a tents-only base with a wonderfully sociable feel and a simple, leave-you-to-it ethos. Owners Louise and Graham are friendly and on hand, but their house, on the opposite side of the tiny country lane, means they can to and fro helpfully from the site without being ever-present or overbearing. Facilities are simple but effective – a block with toilets, showers and wash basins – while a few electrical hook-ups are provided for those in need of this added ‘luxury’.

Off site, though the aforementioned footpaths make for excellent walking, most things around here are best reached by car. Head south and the coastline twists and curves around you, with the endless sands of Slapton on the eastern side and the craggy headlands of Hope and Thurleston to the west. The Kingsbridge Estuary sits in the middle like a watery centrepiece, clustered with picturesque villages along its banks. For something different, National Trust owned Saltram House is a Georgian era mansion edging Plymouth. It’s a fantastic spot en route to the city, which together make for the perfect rainy day cover if the weather decides to spoil your fun!

Peaceful and amazing views
Really enjoyed our stay, peaceful and quiet with lots of space. Over the Bank Holiday it was a bit busier but there was still plenty of space and no queues at all for use of the facilities, which were perfectly clean and adequate. Nice to see fridges as well as a freezer. The views were just the best, watching the sun set over Dartmoor with a campfire. We enjoyed the farm produce, the steaks are very good and it was a lovely touch to have ice creams brought around in the evening. Definitely be visiting again.

Camping with Kids
We had a fantastic stay at Holsome Park. Brilliant pitches with stunning views of Dartmoor, especially in the evening when the sun is setting. Pitches are a good size and they don’t cram loads of tents in when others would. Facilities are great (also include phone charging station and refrigerators to use). There is a little pop up shop every morning and evening run by Seb and Ella the owners children. We have 2 young kids (7+5) and they loved feeding the chickens, lambs and calves in the morning and playing on the swings. Louise and Graham are very friendly as are their children. We will definitely come back again. Thank you for a fantastic stay.

Camping with farm animals
Good sized pitches with electric. 5yr old loved feeding the animals in the morning and couldn’t wait to run down to the sheep every morning. There was lots of campers there while we were there so was lively during the early evenings but was very quiet as the sun set and remained quiet all night. Our 2nd year camping on the farm and we are already looking at booking next year

A great view.
Great and friendly site with a beautiful view over the valley. Loads of space for the kids to run around and play. Facilities were clean and as advertised with a family shower room. The showers are basic, but be prepared to cover your clothes before you get in as there is little to no protection. We had a great feeding session with Seb which the kids loved. We had some lovely evenings with stunning sun sets and a warming fire pit, but it was fairly exposed to the wind. Nothing a good coat and extra log couldn’t fix. All in all a great stay in a lovely part of South Devon.

Graham and Louise welcome you to Holsome Park Camping, a family-run campsite situated in the heart of the Devon countryside, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. We open for the summer holidays. The campsite is flat and grassy making it an ideal camping ground. We offer generous pitch sizes for you to make the most of your holiday. The campsite is spacious and enjoys unspoilt panoramic views to Dartmoor. Conveniently located 10 minutes from the A38, between Dartmoor and the South Devon coast. The farm and campsite are run in an environmentally conscious fashion. Holsome Park Camping welcomes families with children and well behaved dogs. The campsite has toilets, showers and washing up facilities.
Nearby attractions

Amble around the Avon valley with excellent footpaths right from the campsite's doorstep or drive to nearby attractions including the Pennywell Farm Activity Centre (01364 642023) or Paignton (01803 697500) and Dartmoor Zoo's (01752 837645). For something more cultural, it is a 25 minute drive to the National Trust's Saltram House (01752 333500) and a little further to medieval Cotehele (01579 351346) and Buckland Abbey (01822 853607). For many, though, the coast is the most obvious attraction. It's 10 miles to the nearest beaches, including Bigbury, Bantham, South Sands, Blackpool Sands, East Soar Cove, and Slapton.

Food and drink

Campers can purchase meat, burgers, bacon, sausages and eggs right from the farm – BBQs permitted off the ground. The nearest pubs are a bit of a trek away, with the excellent New Inn (01548 821326), in Moreleigh, over 3 miles away and around 10 minutes in the car. The locals are worth the journey though. The Cott Inn (01803 863777) at Dartington, and the Ship (01752 892565) or Anchor (01752 690388) at Ugborough are all worth a visit.
