Family-friendly camping between Dartmoor and Exmoor on a working organic dairy farm

Set in mid Devon's fabled Heartland, Billingsmoor Farm is a 400-acre family-run dairy farm less than 20 miles from the soft sands of Exmouth’s famous family beaches and 20 miles from Dartmoor and Exmoor’s National Parks. Listening to affable owner Jayne explain how her and her partner Robert built Billingsmoor into the place it is today is a fascinating tale. They moved to the farm over 15 years ago, during a turbulent time in UK farming. From the start, they faced a difficult choice: to push their cows for more milk in order to meet increasing supermarket demand, or to change their approach to farming completely. Fortunately – for us and for the 200 Friesians – they chose the latter, and their organic dairy farm is now open to campers for six months of the year.

Although the site is eminently accessible (just three miles from the M5 motorway), it feels like a true escape. Billingsmoor is one of eight working farms on the Duchy of Cornwall estate, nestled between Devon’s sandy southern beaches and its rugged north coastline. Overlooking 350 acres of rolling hills and grassland, the views here are breathtaking.

Not wishing to compromise the tranquility of this picture-perfect scene, Billingsmoor provides just five prized pitches, meaning campers never feel hemmed in. The elevated plots offer panoramic views overlooking lush fields and forests, while each off-grid pitch boasts a private toilet and sink (with cold running water) and a firepit and picnic bench. It's a car-free zone, too, meaning kids are free to run themselves ragged in safety (wheelbarrows are handily provided to trundle your gear to camp). The communal wash-block, laundry and kitchen facilities, meanwhile, are clean, modern and centrally-heated, while charming little touches like the onsite honesty pantry demonstrate a thoughtful attention to detail.

Curious campers have ample opportunity to learn about organic farming onsite. Meeting the amenable herd of organic Friesians, Kunekune pigs, sheep, ducks, geese and chickens will soon lift the heavy weight of urban life from your shoulders. Plus, as well as the varied programme of events – from walking parties to celebrations – an added attraction is the farm's forestry school, where you can master key bushcraft skills before cooking lunch and spotting flora and fauna. So, whatever your age, a stay at Billingsmoor offers a real education.

Billingsmoor Farm is in Mid Devon, also known as Devon's Heartland. Surrounded by beautiful countryside each of our 5 elevated pitches offers panoramic views, overlooking the fields and our forest that offers natural and safe play for children. With no light pollution the stars will shine brightly for you. Our site is less than 20 miles from the soft sands of Exmouth's famous family beach and 20 miles from Dartmoor and Exmoor's National Parks. We are surrounded by National Trust Properties, two of which are within 10 miles away from us. Dartmoor and Exmoor are nearby, and the historic city of Exeter is only 15 miles away.  The camping field is set on our 400-acre family dairy farm that is farmed under the Organic Stewardship Scheme which ensures it is managed with the environment in mind. People are free to roam our beautiful fields and although we do not allow access to the animals we do try to allow time for people to get to see the milking and if any are available to feed the calves. Each pitch has got a private toilet and sink, cold running water, fire pit and picnic bench. There is no electric hook-up, but electricity is available in both the shower block and kitchen area. The shower block is modern and centrally heated, we also have laundry facilities and undercover washing up facilities. We have got a little on site pantry that is operated on an honesty basis that offers some basic goods as well as some local fare. We can also provide you with arrival meals, please ensure you pre-book these far in advance before arrival. As well as a varied programme of events – from walking parties to celebrations – an added attraction is the forestry school where you can master key bushcraft skills before cooking lunch and spotting flora and fauna. Whatever your age, a stay at Billingsmoor offers a real education. There's no better place to while away an afternoon than at the Butterleigh Inn a 400 year old longhouse with log fires and a peaceful garden. The bakehouse in Collumpton serves delicious cakes and fresh coffee and is a great spot to stop and watch the world pass by!

We enjoyed a great long weekend at Billingsmoor. There is really anything to add to the previous glowing reviews, but I will reiterate them: lovely pitches, HOT showers, private loo, on site store, fridge/freezer for storing stuff, amazing views and peaceful location. Thanks for having us Jayne!

We had a fantastic couple of nights at Billingsmoor campsite. We loved the large pitches and beautiful views and private toilet! The shop supplied us with fresh milk and delicious sausages for the bbq too. The kids loved being on a farm and seeing tractors and cows and we loved the birdsong and watching the swallows in the eves of the old stables. We would love to come back!

Loved our visit to Billingsmoor. Pitch views worth the navigation of the country lanes to get there. Was fantastic to experience a working farm. Robert and Jane were very welcoming and helpful hosts.

Our most recent visit to Billingsmoor Farm was great as usual. Billingsmoor is an absolute gem with its private pitches and great facilities. Most importantly, Jayne and her family were wonderful hosts making us feel at home every time. We are already missing Billingsmoor and looking forward to visiting it in the next season.

Lovely stay at billingsmoor!
With kids
We loved our stay at bollingsmoor farm. The views were amazing. My boys (12 and 2) loved seeing the cows and wonder on the forest nearly. The pitch was spacious and we had our own toilet. The shower block was lovely and had everything we needed it. The honesty shop had so many items, including bacon, sausages, eggs, various drinks. We loved the variety and used it often. Jayne was so lovely and helpful. Her breakfast's baguettes we're so tasty. We couldn't recommend billingsmoor farm enough. We even grew to love the country roads that took us into the farm We hope to come back soon.

Loved it!

We all loved our stay on Billingsmoor farm (our children are aged 13, 10 and 6). The setting is beautiful and the pitch was a treat. It had a spring water tap, fire pit and it’s own toilet shed! It’s a proper working farm, not a ‘pretend’ one with a few cuddly animals for the kids to pet. The farm tour with Jayne was very interesting and thought provoking, we learnt a lot about the politics and economics of land use in the UK. We enjoyed a Sunday lunch at the local pub, a trip to Budleigh Salterton and a fantastic child friendly bike ride from Darts Farm to Exmouth. A fantastic experience, we will be back!

From the host
Billingsmoor Farm is a 400 acre Organic Dairy Farm situated in Mid Devon, otherwise known as the Heartland of Devon. We milk 200 British Frisian cows. Our farm is run on an organic system and is registered with the Organic Farmers and Growers association. All of our milk is sold to Muller Wiseman Dairies who bottle it and distribute it to retail outlets and doorstep delivery. We also have calves, pet pigs and chickens. Our farm attracts an abundance of wildlife and with our woodland we are very popular with the local birdlife who make their nests in the woods. We were one of the first farms to work in conjunction with Featherdown farms to be able to offer people the chance to come and stay on a working farm and see for themselves how food is produced and how farmers manage the countryside. Billingsmoor Farm in Butterleigh is a traditional Organic Dairy Farm and is on the Bradninch Estate, which forms part of the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The Duchy of Cornwall and Prince Charles are well known for supporting both farming and the conservation of the countryside, and we here at Billingsmoor like to think that we can support this ethos in the work that we do here.
Nearby attractions

The nearby town of Tiverton boasts plenty of attractions, not least the Tiverton Museum (01884 256295) and Great Western Canal where you can take a traditional horse-drawn barge courtesy of the Tiverton Barge Co. (01884 253345). For little ones, the Devon Railway Centre (01884 855671) promises hours of train-based fun, while The Bear Trail (01392 881780) is a muddy all-ages obstacle course that all the family will love. For walkers the Devonshire Heartland Way can be picked up easily from the site, and there are two stately National Trust properties nearby in Knightshayes and Killerton. Keep things simple with a spot of wild swimming, or go to Coryton Cove, a secluded beach close to Dawlish, where dolphins have been spotted. Exmoor and Dartmoor are both within a 40-minute drive, and there's a weekly cattle market at Newton Abbot. There are photo opportunities aplenty at Clovelly, a pretty fishing village where Charles Kingsley was inspired to write the Water Babies.

Food and drink

The Butterleigh Inn (01884 855433) – a 400 year old longhouse with log fires and a peaceful garden – is the pick of the local pubs. The Lamb Inn (01392 860272) in Silverton and the Fisherman's Cot (01884 855237) also come highly recommended, with both serving a varied menu of pub grub favourites. The Bakehouse (01884 35222) in Collumpton serves delicious cakes and fresh coffee and is a great spot to stop and watch the world pass by. For fine dining, head to the HH Restaurant (01392 461472) in Broadclyst, just outside of Exeter, which serves modern British food with a French twist. Celeb-chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage empire is also based round these parts, with the River Cottage Canteen & Deli (01297 631715) found in Axminster. Billingsmoor also operate a small onsite honesty pantry and pre-prepared meals can be arranged for your arrival (pre-booking essential).
