The grounds of a 17th century manor where a relaxed atmosphere and sense of pleasant privacy rules

The 36 acres of undulating fields, immaculate gardens and enchanting woodland that surrounds the 17th century manor house of Trewan Hall, makes for a near perfect camping spot. Positioned just outside the pretty parish town of St. Columb Major, this family-orientated campsite has been run by the Hill's' for over 50 years, so it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about camping. And with Cornwall’s finest walks, pristine white sand beaches and picture postcard villages right on the site's doorstep, you don’t have to be eagle-eyed to realise why they never left.

Trewan’s camping area itself is lovely and small enough to feel quite private. There are two slightly sloping fields (one smaller and more family-friendly) plus a larger field with plenty of space and a real ‘away from it all’ atmosphere. The management here are flexible, meaning campers can ‘pitch where you like’. So if you spot a secluded corner that takes your fancy, it’s yours. Not being slap bang on the Cornish coast means the site is relatively sheltered from the elements, however it’s worth mentioning a country lane runs alongside the smaller camping field, but unless you’re an extremely light sleeper you won’t be disturbed by the infrequent traffic.

Caravans and motorhomes are also welcome at Trewan Hall. But fret not, canvas campers: given the site’s pursuit of natural beauty over profit, the grass-only pitches and absence of hard-standings mean only a relatively small number of caravans take their chances, so the comprehensive views of rolling fields, parish churches and grass-munching cattle remain largely unbroken. The facilities here are pretty comprehensive too, with a brand-new ablution block equipped with showers, baths, washing-up sinks and electric razor points. Best of all, guests are free to use the fully supervised, 25-metre heated swimming pool (open during high season) – just the ticket for cooling off when the Cornish sun comes out to play.

You won’t have a shortage of things to do here. Not only do you have the nearby historic town of St. Columb Major, with its time-honoured country pubs, you’re also only a flip-flop away from the tranquil coastline of Mawgan Porth. And 14 miles down the road you'll discover the world's largest (and most impressive) greenhouse, The Eden Project. These sights combined with cosy, grassy comfort that comes with field camping makes Trewan Hall an ideal place to pitch up.

What a lovely site and location! The site is great and meet the needs of adults, children and dogs. The staff are superb and very helpful. The evening entertainment was much better than I had anticipated and something for everyone. The location means that you can get anywhere in Cornwall with ease and near some of the best beaches around! We will be going back!!

Have just come back from our annual trip to this lovely site and it just gets better.  New washing up area, refurbished loos and showers, a rustic mobile pizza oven and new names on the evening entertainments programme including a local story teller in costume.  Can't recommend this site highly enough - a fab team of people running it, extremely family (and dog) friendly, gorgeous woodlands and really relaxing.  Well worth a visit!

It's hard for me to dislike Trewan. I've been coming here since a toddler and barely a year has gone by without at least one visit, sometimes two. It has become the campsite that all others are compared to. Trewan is by no means perfect - but what it lacks in ultra-modern facilities (they are undergoing improvements) it more than makes up for with it's setting. Based in the grounds of an old stately hall and bordered by trees and narrow Cornish lanes, Trewan is the epitome of tranquility. At this point I should point out that I always visit out of high season when Trewan is very popular with families. There's a lovely vibe about the place, all the outbuildings have been built with the location in mind, using local building materials that blend in to the surroundings rather than stand out. There's no over the top signage, no tedious one way system, no marked out pitches - it won't be long into your stay when you also start to blend in to the surroundings! The campsite is split in to two main fields; Calves Close is an open field dotted with electric hook-up points and a short woodland walk to the shop/reception, Barn Park is a more sheltered field next to the shop and this field has no electric (and thus fewer caravans). For me, Barn Park is the true spirit of camping and a chance to get back to how camping used; no televisions and microwaves, more cheery hellos and conversations with your fellow campers. Pitches are not allocated, you are free to camp 'freestyle' - this allows the visitor more space; the site keeps the numbers under control so as not to over-stretch the facilities. There's a camp shop for basic provisions. A 25 metre pool, a play area for young ones, and evening entertainment during the busier parts of the year. This family-run campsite couldn't be more welcoming; visit more than twice and I'm sure you'll be remembered by name and welcomed back like an old friend, Trewan Hall really is a jewel amongst the already-beautiful Cornish landscape. Using the back lanes you can be on any number of the north coast's finest beaches in 15 minutes, Padstow or Newquay in 20. The main road to Truro takes a little over half an hour and Falmouth, St. Ives or Penzance can all be reached in less than an hour.

Nestled amidst 36 acres of gently rolling fields, meticulously tended gardens, and captivating woodlands, lies the timeless charm of Trewan Hall. This 17th-century manor house, surrounded by its verdant expanse, creates an idyllic haven for camping enthusiasts. Just a stone's throw away from the picturesque parish town of St. Columb Major, this family-oriented campsite has been lovingly managed by the Hill family for over five decades. With Cornwall's most breathtaking walks, pristine sandy beaches, and quintessential villages at its doorstep, Trewan Hall effortlessly captivates the hearts of its visitors. It's no wonder why generations of campers have found solace and adventure within its embrace Located between Newquay & Padstow, find a unique campsite to explore and enjoy the best that Cornwall has to offer A stay at Trewan is something to treasure. For over 50 years the Hill family has been proud to welcome campers to our award winning site. The campsite is spread over 36 acres of woodlands and centres around the stunning 17th century manor. With a heated 25m swimming pool and extensive facilities Trewan Hall has been a family favourite for generations of campers. Onsite there is shop, open 14 hours a day in high season and sells things campers need: groceries, fresh bread, pasties, camping equipment, toys and souvenirs. Also during high season we have a packed schedule of evening entertainment, from live bands to storytellers there is something for everyone. We encourage visitors to use our Front Field for their own cricket or football matches. And we put on the occasional Barbeque alongside a free "Campers Swim" on clear evenings. You are welcome to use a library and writing room in the old hall which has free WiFi for those who want it. There is also a full-sized billiard table for the proficient. St Columb Major, a short walk from the Site, has a choice of good pubs and places to eat out. The estate is spread over beautiful gardens and native woodlands, we also have our own private woodland where dogs can be let off the lead. We warmly welcome families and couples to enjoy the excited busy holiday atmosphere during the high season or perhaps the more tranquil time in the low season.
Nearby attractions

Nearby, the world famous Eden Project (01726 811911) is one millennium project that appears to have been a success. Each football-like Biome takes visitors into a different region of the world; trek through a humid South American rainforest, or experience the dry deserts of Northern Africa. There’s plenty going on in the Outdoor Biome too, with 13 hectares of garden containing almost 2,000 plant species. The flat, easygoing Camel Trail starts in Padstow and runs east through Wadebridge (along the Camel Estuary) before finishing at Poley's Bridge. The Padstow–Wadebridge section makes a splendid half-day excursion, but it does get crowded; an estimated 350,000 people tackle the trail every year. The Wadebridge–Bodmin section is usually quieter and just as dramatic. Bikes can be hired from both ends. A Viking ship, the 'beast' vertical drop and the big-ticket Morgawr rollercoaster await visitors to Crealy Adventure Park (01395 233200.) Disneyland it isn't, but the kids will have fun.

Food and drink

Hot food (try the pasties!) are available all day in the camp shop, and fresh bread and cakes can be purchased from an excellent local bakery. There’s also a fish & chip van and a pizza “horse box” that visits the site once a week. Within walking distance, St. Columb Major has several places to get your fill including: Port & Starboard (01726 860270) who serve up great fish & chips, the atmospheric Ring O Bells (01637 880259) and Goss Moor Tea Garden (01726 861113) with well presented, tasty and reasonably priced cakes and sandwiches. The Smugglers Den Inn (01637 830209) at Cubert is a thatched inn with real atmosphere, traditional food and local ales. Watergate Bay, on the far side of Newquay is home to the much-publicised Fifteen Restaurant (01637 861000), where disadvantaged youngsters are taught the cooking trade.
