Star Gazing Central

Moffat, Saguache, Colorado
40 acres hosted by James L.

The vastness of the San Luis Valley is challenging to fathom. It extends from Villa Grove Colorado in the north all the way south to Taos New Mexico, and the mountains enclosing the northern end can be seen from New Mexico before crossing in to Colorado. The area is home to high alpine desert flora and fauna and has been occupied by human civilizations since as far back as 11000 years ago. Learn more about this land: Included are some photos of maps showing directions to the site. Please take care while navigating to the site, Google or Apple Maps will not get you there, but there is cell service for most providers. At this site, you are in the middle of the valley, in wide open spaces. Feel free to walk around on the established roads, or through the Chico and Sagebrush. Also, feel free to pitch your tent on any of the soft, sandy, open areas between the bushes. There are some where you will park, and some a short walk away, all of varying sizes. There is a primitive outhouse available for use a short walk away, no water, and there is a picture of a map showing the established and flagged trail between the camp site and the outhouse. When there is no fire ban in effect, there is a rock fire pit for your enjoyment! Set up camp, kick back, and enjoy gazing into the night sky! From this area, you will be able to see the Sangre de Cristo mountain range up close and personal including the Crestone Group and Blanca Peak. The sunrises and sunsets in this valley rival the incredible star gazing. It is also about 1 hour to Monarch Ski area, about 40 minutes from Rafting in Browns Canyon, about 40 minutes from rock climbing and mountain biking in Penitente Canyon, about 40 minutes from the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This Place is a geographical anomaly! 40 minutes from everywhere!
