A Life Outdoors is a working / work in progress permaculture sanctuary.  At 8,500 feet above sea level, the biodiversity (beauty) is remarkably high due to the fact we are situated in the La Plata River corridor.  In terms of adventure, a half hour's drive can take you well above timberline at some 11,000 feet in elevation, or down a few thousand feet to some breathtaking and renowned desert scenery.  Ryan, your lead host, is native to the area and well versed in what it has to offer.  He is happy to offer suggestions to help you fill your days.  Our entire family would love to meet anyone who appreciates and helps preserve the ongoing beauty and environmental wealth of the land, and by staying here, you'll be doing just that!

Ryan is awesome!
We stayed here for four days and it was a pretty convenient location for an event we were attending in Durango. We were not at the campsite for much of the day each day. As far as amenities go, this place is super basic and minimalistic. If you're cool with that, then you'll do well here. Cons: -Lots of road noise even through the night -Not super private; this tent site is in the host's yard -No "real" restroom (composting bucket) or sink or "real" shower (solar shower via hose--not enclosed; I showered on a day it had been raining all day so the water was ice cold) Pros: -Close to town's amenities but outside of the hustle and bustle of Durango -That there even is any form of a toilet and shower is still a bonus -Fire pit available (we made a nice fire one night) -Camping on a budget; this is an inexpensive way to camp -The biggest and BEST pro is that the host, Ryan, is SOOO nice, chill, inviting, friendly and super accommodating; he made it worth our while and we appreciate his awesomeness! Thanks, Ryan, for your kindness and for letting us share your space for a few days! You were wonderful and we couldn't have asked for a nicer host. :)

He was friendly and helpful. The scenery was beautiful, if you overlooked his collection of stuff. It was more primative than I expected. The outhouse door had a window without a curtain, which was a little uncomfortable with 3 teenagers. It was not a KOA, however it was more private than a KOA. I paid for 2 nights, but we spent the second night at the KOA. My wife was just not comfortable with the idea of going into someone else's house for a shower.

This was a great campsite for two of us and our dog. Very accessible from the main road yet has a private feel, awesome rushing river, and we were able to make a fire with the help of some supplies from a kind neighbor.

Cardinal Camper on the River
Ryan and his family are very sweet and have a lovely property right by the river! It was great to talk with Ryan our son got to play with his very cool son. We knew it would be too cold for us to camp with our children in May in Durango, and we were attending a conference, so we knew we needed to have quick access to a way to cook inside. This camper was perfect! It allowed us to at least feel a little bit more at home, rather than cold and wet. Just a few notes, the site is right outside Durango which was very convenient, but it is a higher elevation so can be much colder seasonally, so be sure to bring extra warm clothing. Also, the river was running quite fast when we went, just a caution to those with kids and dogs, to be more aware, but we only went down there with the kids and felt quite safe. We would definitely camp there again!

Nice spot next to the river
The camp is really close to Mesa Verde but it needs a spring cleaning in the camping area. The river gives an awesome atmosphere but the clutter made it hard to feel at peace. Would stay here if the camp was cleaned and organized!
