Camping and glamping right next to the Gorges de l’Ardèche, a camping field, luxury yurts, safari tents, a beautiful river, and welcoming hosts

On a shady, wooded hillside overlooking the Ardèche River, Mille Étoiles is easily one of the most beautiful campsites in all of France. The forested land, sitting high above a canyon of sparkling, turquoise waters, is so fairy-tale-perfect, in fact, that weddings aplenty have taken place here.

Experienced campers who celebrate the great outdoors get the most out of a stay at Mille Étoiles. The surroundings are a treasure trove of footpaths and trails, while the wooded setting gives a slight wilderness feel, despite the fact that every little comfort is catered for – from lanterns at night to posh toiletries in the wash-rooms. Those seeking extra luxury, though, are just as welcome, nesting themselves in the growing glamping side of the campsite.

Mille Étoiles test-drove a few yurts in 2003, with no electricity or water, way before glamping in Francetook off, and cite nature as their  star attraction. One look at these nomadic Mongolian yurts and fancy family bathrooms, though, suggests that there’s a lot more to the campsite than the enchanting surroundings.

Raised on pine platforms, the yurts (now 'electrified') are each scattered a decent distance apart, with sumptuous double beds inside draped with large mosquito nets. Each one is themed (for example boudoir, Edwardian safari, Indian, Thai) and furnished with chunky wooden chests or canvas wardrobes, ethnic pictures, and recycled bedside tables. Starched, comfortable hammocks swing outside, while, within, a practical kitchenette has a fridge, stove and coffee machine, where you can make your hammock-ready brew.

There are a further two safari lodges, divided inside into rooms, including a well equipped kitchen and dining area, and providing the most space for large families. ‘The Village’, meanwhile, is a tent-only camping field, that has been recently development to encourage more campers. Situated on the other side of the handcrafted pizzeria and café, the field is near a facilities block and all guests share the kids’ playground and campsite library. If wildlife is the only luxury you need, bag one of the camping pitches there or in the woods.

Its a 20-minute scramble down a steep decline from the campsite to the water and, once on the river bed, walkers can follow the river the length of the gorge. If all that splashing about doesn’t wear you out then counting the stars certainly will. With no electricity on site, they shine brighter than you'll ever have seen before after dark and sit like a sparkly blanket above the trees. They are the mille étoilesthat give the site its name and will get you well on  your way to a good night’s sleep. 1, 2, 3…

Safari Lodge TUCANA (pets prohibited)
Outstanding
Wow!! What a beautiful place to visit! Everything was truly perfect! The kindest of hosts, Nadine and her family, brilliant accommodation which was perfect for our family of 9, and a quiet, spacious and friendly atmosphere. We couldn’t have asked for anything more. We stayed for 1 week and next week we are planning a 2 week stay. There is so much to do close by…. Kayaking down the river Ardeche, and our family favourite which was a lovely walk down to the river to spend the day swimming and jumping of the rocks.

Mongolian Yurt - ffe2
We rented a yurt at Milles Etoiles for a week at the start of August and it totally surpassed all expectations. Nadine and her team are so friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere on site feels like you are in a different world - it's a perfect bubble, away from real life yet close to loads of activities to keep you busy if you want. The yurt was great - very comfortable, clean and loads of space for a family of 4.Even though it was hot, mid 30Cs in the day the yurt stayed pretty cool and we had no problems sleeping. The kitchen is really well equipped and more than adequate to make family meals however we made the most of the restaurant on site eating delicious pizzas and salads at a very reasonable price most evenings! The shower blocks are clean and spacious and we never had to queue. The walk to the river, whilst strenuous in the heat, was more than worth it and by the end of the week our 5 & 7 year old were totally acclimatised and we managed it in 35 minutes each way - just make sure you take plenty of water and walking shoes/trainers with you. The river swimming was the best and we could have simply done this all day everyday exploring different rocks to jump off and just being but we did venture out had great days at the Chateau des Roure only 10 mins down the road and the Chauvet Cave 2. We can't wait to come back next year!

What a fantastic holiday! We rented a yurt for a week at the start of August - we weren't quite sure what to expect but Milles Etoiles completely surpassed all expectations and Nadine and her team are so friendly and welcoming. The yurt was very comfortable, clean and extremely well equipped. Although the temperatures were in the mid 30Cs in the day we didn't overheat at all. The attached kitchen was perfect to make family meals but I have to say we made the most of the lovely restaurant on site- amazing pizzas and salads etc that are very reasonably priced indeed. The walk to and from the river, whilst strenuous in the heat, was more than worth it and by the end of the week our 5 & 7 year old were totally acclimatised and we managed it in 35 minutes each way. You really feel like you are away from everything but yet so close to some great attractions and we had a great day at the Chateau des Roure just 10 mins down the road. We felt like we were in a bubble whilst on holiday, we all completely relaxed in the wonderful atmosphere on the site -we felt like we were in a different world. We can't wait to go back next year.

Just had a fab week here. The owners are friendly & the 30-40 min hike down the gorge to the river is well worth it for a relatively remote and peaceful stretch of river which is great for swimming & jumping off rocks. It’s way quieter than much of the surrounding area which was the highlight for us and the campsite has a very laid back, relaxed feel

The site is great, the location is amazing. My group and I camped in our own tents before leaving and returning to stay in a Safari Tent for two nights. The Safari Tents are amazing, I would 100% recommend to anyone considering it. When camping we had a good sized pitch and the toilets were clean and well maintained, you do need to bring loo roll. The site is located in a beautiful spot a nice distance away from Vallon and feels rural without being inaccessible. The restaurant on site does a good pizza and wine although you will need to check which days it is open. There are two BBQs which we made use of (make sure you bring your own charcoal). We only saw one other group using them when we stayed however it was mid-May and everywhere was very quiet. The Safari tents are amazing, the website doesn't do them justice. The owners of the site are great, it would have been better if I had brushed up on my French before leaving as there was a language barrier but they were very hospitable and helpful. The outstanding thing about this campsite though is that you can walk down through the forest to the river. It takes about 20 minutes walk and it steep at points but worthwhile. I wouldn't hesitate to go back again at the same time of year.

Nearby attractions
Canoe on the Ardèche or Cèze. Hire boats and instructors from canoyak.fr to take a 2-hour or 2-day excursion. Park at Sauze and a shuttle bus runs to Vallon Pont d’Arc, so you can pick up your vehicle at the end of the day. Join the throngs at the iconic sandy beach of Vallon Pont d’Arc, or view it from the road above. This stone ‘bridge’ is one of France’s best-known landmarks and epitimises all that is great about the country (throwing off your clothes for a swim in a river sounds appealing to us). Barjac is a short drive away – worth a visit on Friday mornings for market day.
Food and drink
A recent addition to the campsite is an excellent little restaurant with reasonable prices and hefty portions food. There is a varied menu (including local specialities) and the mussels (with fries) are a particular highlight. There is a small farm shop near the campsite; ask for directions.
