Spot whales, turtles, and seabirds on a caravan road trip through this Pilbara port town.
Life revolves around the ocean in Port Hedland at the heart of the Pilbara Coast. But with the Great Northern Highway and North West Coastal Highway both bringing road trippers into town, this coastal hub is also an important gateway to the north. Fishing, crabbing, and whale-watching are the main attractions for campers passing through, but some of the region’s most impressive attractions require a bit of driving. Head west to Karratha, where you can cruise out to the islands of the Dampier Archipelago, camp by white-sand beaches along the Burrup Peninsula, and admire the wildflowers at Murujuga National Park, or continue south to the bush campgrounds at Millstream Chichester National Park. In Port Hedland itself, options range from beachside campgrounds for self-sufficient campers only to tourist parks and caravan parks with powered sites and amenities such as a camp kitchen, dump point, and laundry facilities.
