The Barossa Valley town northeast of Adelaide was historically nicknamed “Travellers’ Rest,” and modern-day campers might agree. Situated on the Sturt Highway that runs inland through South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales, Truro is a convenient place to stop en route to other Barossa Valley towns, the Riverland region, or even inland Mildura, over the border in New South Wales. Truro campsites typically offer tent camping and cabins or more formal accommodation. Truro is one of the last towns in the hills, before the highway drops onto the drier, flatter plains heading east. Truro is also an easy weekend getaway from Adelaide, as it’s about an hour’s drive away. Self-catering campers will enjoy the town’s abundance of local olives, bread, and, of course, wine, available at farmers’ markets in the region and at cellar doors and winery restaurants.
