This Barossa Valley town is a hub for hikers, wine lovers, and weekenders.
“Tanunda” is said to come from the Aboriginal word for “watering hole,” and there’s no doubt that this is a town for wine-loving campers. As one of the largest towns in the Barossa Valley and just an hour’s drive from Adelaide, Tanunda has 150 wineries, including big names like Penfolds, Jacobs Creek, and Rockford Wines, right on its doorstep. Stroll the town's leafy streets, and you’ll stumble across more than a dozen cellar doors sandwiched between cafés and country pubs. Wine tasting isn’t the only thing to do in Tanunda, though. The 750-mile (1,200-kilometre) Heysen Trail runs through town, and outdoor adventurers can enjoy plenty of short hikes and bike rides through the vineyards. Tanunda camping options include camping on a local farm, renting an off-grid cabin among the vines, or checking into a family-friendly holiday park with an on-site swimming pool.
