A pink lake, a botanical garden, and a ferry ride across the Murray River.
No, we’re not talking about the capital of New Zealand or the waterproof boots! South Australia’s “Wellington” is a small town along the northeast shore of Lake Alexandrina at the mouth of the mighty Murray River. Just a 70-minute drive from Adelaide, Wellington is best known for its historic Murray River car ferry, which has been running since the mid-19th century and offers free river crossings up to six times an hour. Camping options are limited in town, but there is a caravan park in town with powered sites and a dump point, and several campgrounds and Hipcamps dotted around the shores of neighbouring Lake Alexandrina. Once you’ve enjoyed fishing and bird-watching along the river and around the lake, don’t miss a visit to nearby attractions, including the Pink Lake, Pangarinda Botanic Garden, and the 19th-century Poltalloch Homestead. Or, continue your road trip east to the Victoria border or south to the Limestone Coast.
