Skagit river camping

17 sites · RVs, Tents3 acres · Sedro Woolley, WA
End of the road. Start of an epic camping weekend. River to the side, Cascade foothill mountains surround. One flush toilet, porta potty and shower. Each site has river access. Sand and grass. Close to the north cascades. Minutes from live music, bars and quality mexican restaurant. Rails to trail for bikes and walking. Tward the end of july the river starts to recede opening up more possibilities of having interaction with the river. That being said its crucial you keep an eye out on your kids. We had a guy out here who almost killed his kids multiple times underestimating the current. Watch out!!Kinda going for the peaceful, listen to the river and birds, vibe. Would rather there be no music and if there is then super low and off by 7

Camp Keyser Forest Camp

8 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents5 acres · Swede Heaven, WA
Camp Keyser is a wooded 5 acre parcel in the mountains, near mountain loop highway - in the center of everything wonderful in the northern cascade mountains. We have one private cabin and 6 campsites. Tent campers will enjoy the lush landscape of a mature forest with sites along the (seasonal) Thirsty Creek. Nearby (3 minute walk), users can contemplate views of Whitehorse Mountain, Jumbo Mountain, Glacier Peak, and Whitechuck Mountain. This part of the Stillaguamish valley and the adjacent Mountain Loop Highway is known for a great selection of hiking trails, at all skill levels. It is perfect hub for all of your outdoor interests. The trailhead for the summit of Whitehorse Mountain is just a mile away, as is Old Mine Road trail (45 minute hike ending in 2 waterfalls). A 15-20 minute walk takes campers to a swimming hole in the cool Stillaguamish river for a dip or a paddle. Even closer is Whitehorse Regional Trail (great for biking, walking and horseback riding) built on the bed of the former BNSF railroad through the North Stillaguamish River Valley, spanning over 27 miles. The nearly level trail meanders through the valley, rewarding visitors with picturesque, landscape views of forests, farmland, streams and rivers, and mountain vistas. Sites have a generous fire pit and access to a Porta-Potty. For bathing I recommend cool dip in the Stillaguamish River. In season there is also fishing, snowshoeing, concerts at the blue grass festival grounds, a rodeo, and so much more.

The River's Edge Camp Ground

1 site · RV1 acre · Concrete, WA
This is a hidden gem! This is waterfront on the river where you can relax, play in the river with your own beach for your stay. It's a Very beautiful private open RV and Trailer Site on the Skagit River. I have currently owned the property for 10 or so years. This is one of my happy places to bring friends and family and relax. This is where we get our river therapy. Nothing better than sitting by the camp fire watching the river flow and listening to the nature. There is a nice big fire pit as well as a log picnic table. Lots of room to lounge around and enjoy the peace and quiet. Watch the eagle and fish on the river as you sit by the campfire. Kayak down the river from RockPort bridge and pull out right at camp. It's about a two and half hour float down with a Kayak right to camp. Close drive to Baker Lake for the day to hike or sight see. An hour or so away from North Cascade Hwy passes. Or if you feel like a drive, head to Winthrop for the day and walk the town. Fishing can be done right at the site or a short walk to the point. Check the fishing regulations for the time of year you want to fish.

The best camping near North Cascades National Park guide

Overview

About

Spread out over half a million acres of old-growth forests, glaciers, and alpine lakes, North Cascades National Park is among the most pristine areas in Washington. This massive expanse has a network of hiking trails and ample opportunities for kayaking, mountain biking, and—of course—camping. You won't find the big crowds and extensive facilities common to other national parks here, though there are a few seasonal visitors centers for permits and supplies. The park can be accessed via the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20) or by taking a boat to Lake Chelan, north of Leavenworth, and then taking a passenger ferry to remote Stehekin.

North Cascades National Park RV Camping

The northernmost of Washington's national parks, North Cascades National Park is one of the most remote parts of the state. While much of the park is only accessible on foot or by boat, there are quite a few RV-friendly campgrounds. Options include the Colonial Creek North and South Campgrounds, the Newhalem Creek Campground, the Goodell Creek Campground, and the Lower Goodell Creek Group Campground. You can reserve campsites up to six months in advance, though RV sites often fill up quickly. Fortunately, there are plenty of private RV camping alternatives within easy reach of the park on Hipcamp, many situated on private patches of land or even on local farms. You'll find a good selection along Washington State Highway 20 in the Marblemount area, and some offer direct access to the raging waters of the Cascade River. Look out for RV amenities like full hookups, dump station access, and firepits.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for RV campers: Newhalem Creek Campground offers easy Skagit River access and numerous sites with hookups that fit small RVs.
  • Best for quiet campers: Gorge Lake Campground near Rockport offers just eight tent-camping sites plus vault toilets, but no potable water.
  • Best for anglers, boaters, and hikers: Colonial Creek Campground offers flush toilets, a fishing pier, a kayak and boat launch, and easy access to the Thunder Knob trailhead

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Campsites can be booked up to six months in advance on the National Park Service website. Reservations open at 7am Pacific Time, so wake up early to secure your spot.
  2. Some campgrounds are also open on a first-come, first-served basis outside of the reservation season.
  3. There are 140 designated backcountry campsites issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Backcountry permits are required and can be obtained on the same day or the day before your trip.
  4. Boat-in camping is offered on Diablo Lake, Ross Lake, and Lake Chelan.

When to go

North Cascades National Park is a summer destination, and many parts of the park are inaccessible due to snowfall throughout much of the year. While the North Cascades National Park Service Complex is open throughout the year, most other park services (including the North Cascades Visitor Center in the town of Newhalem and the Golden West Visitor Center in Stehekin) shut down in late September and doesn't open up again until the end of May.

Know before you go

  • The park does not sell ice or even firewood at its campsites. The nearest town for stocking up on groceries and supplies is Marblemount. Further east, Twisp and Winthrop also have plenty of spots to eat, shop, and spend the night.
  • Snow-related closures are common along Highway 20 during the spring months. Always check with the Washington State Department of Transportation before heading out.
  • Fire bans are not uncommon, especially in late summer, when the risk of wildfire is at its highest. Check with the ranger station before starting a fire.
