Overview

About

Dolomite, 420 million years old, rises through the sparkling waters of Lake Huron to form Fathom Five National Marine Park. This is a freshwater ecosystem of ancient rock formations, cliff-edge forests, fascinating dive sites on 22 shipwrecks, and orchid species both plentiful and rare. Visit for a day or backcountry camp on starry-skied Flowerpot Island—Fathom Five is equal parts mystery and recreation, ecology and culture—and a welcoming escape to nature.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book early to secure your spot on Flowerpot Island's limited backcountry campsites.
  • Check for cancellations regularly, as plans change and spots may open up.
  • Visit during the shoulder seasons for a better chance at snagging a reservation.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative accommodations when the island is fully booked.

When to go

The best time to visit Fathom Five National Marine Park is during the summer months when the weather is warm and the waters are ideal for diving. However, this is also the busiest season. For a quieter experience, consider the shoulder seasons of late spring or early fall. The park's visitor centre is open daily from 9am to 5pm, except on certain holidays.

Know before you go

  • Ensure you're familiar with diving safety and park regulations before venturing underwater.
  • Be aware of the seasonal hours of operation, as some facilities may be closed during the winter months.
  • Free admission is available for youth, making it a family-friendly destination.
  • Remember to book tour boats in advance for access to Flowerpot Island.
