The views are hypnotic and look down and out over the continental divide. Good morning sun and sunsets can be seen in the same spot. Your car is parked within feet of your deck so Car Campers and experienced campers can enjoy. Designed with campers and dogs in mind. The deck is large (384 square feet) with a tin roof. Some roofs are full size, some 2/3rds and some 1/3rd, depending on what one wants for tent size or sun exposure. (See pictures of each site/deck) Each deck has sun and rain curtains for helping keep comfortable in normal weather. Dogs enjoy a two gate system so quests and dogs can be leash free and away from the road. All dog owners know to pick up after their pets. The human Private Porta John is cleaned weekly. Lights and electrical is 110V (3 prongs) for YOUR coffee pots, electric grills, mattress inflators, crockpots, electric blankets fans, etc. I do not provide any electrical appliances, other than counter area lighting and low level string lights so one can see the night sky. Many of my campers will "Pay it Forward" and leave coffee pots, hot plates, fans and such, so count yourself lucky to find a deck with them. I provide chairs, 5 gallons of fresh water in containers, fickle solar shower and pop up changing room along with an assortment of camping supplies from dog bowls to antimicrobial wipes. I provide various size garbage bags to manage your garbage. Your parking area is next to the deck. Black Mountain’s tasty restaurants are 4 miles away and All Trails is a great app for finding trails suited for your interest. Be respectful to the place and please be friendly to the people you meet. Learn more about this land: Private Glamping Decks with a view that pictures do not do justice. Private decks on a dead-end gravel road mean hopefully the sounds will only be of nature. The conveniences of electricity, porta john, water, chairs, table, roof, cleaning supplies, rain curtains, and astounding views have my Glampers coming back often. Designed with Dogs in mind with a two-gate system and no need for a leash when on the deck. Obnoxious, barking dogs are not welcome, so bring only controlled and well socialized dogs. Help me keep it dog friendly. Never block the road with a park car.

Reeked of portapotty chemicals
Message to host: Hi Doug. My family and I had to leave your rental tonight and book another air bnb open air cabin. We were unable to stay at your rental because there was an overwhelming chemical smell coming from the blue chemicals inside the portapotty toilet. We booked your rental because we experience chemical sensitivities and your rental is open air. While someone invests in a mountain air glamping experience, doesn't it make sense that they should not have to smell such an overwhelmingly strong chemical smell from the toilet that is two sets of stairs away? We want to smell forest, wood, nature. We came for nature here - we are from the city. Please consider refunding us our money. There's no reason why we should have to pay. Hope our experience can help you make changes to accommodate a changing world where fragrances and strong carcinogenic chemicals will be banned in the US like they are in many other countries. Blessings to you. Thanks. We will be contacting HipCamp for a refund. Doug didn't issue a refund. Why would you not issue a refund if we didn't stay there AND had to be inconvenienced by traveling to his rental for no reason (wasting hours of our time on vacation). That's okay though - the law of energy works everything out. May all beings own their shortcomings and do the right thing.

This was my third time staying at Above The Fray! Every spot has great views and plenty of privacy. I really appreciate having the counter space, table and electricity. Every time I stay, I never want to leave! Also, only 15 min to Black Mtn where there are some awesome restaurants and shops.

We had a great weekend! I'm shocked that we were the only ones staying at above the fray this weekend. The weather was chilly but honestly we wouldn't have changed a thing. The views are breathtaking and Doug went above and beyond for what he provides. All the best!

Lovely views at 275.
Poor Host!
Yes, the views are nice, But the experience from host was very poor. The site we stayed at was double booked. A couple staying at another site arrived also to find their site occupied. Doug told them to go ahead and stay at site 275 because it was available. That was not the case. My guest arrived early to set up, and that was ok to do because I verified with Doug prior to arrival, to find another couple set up at my site. Myself and three other people tried calling Doug, sending messages thru Hipcamp to find out what happened No response from host till midday the next day. No reasonable explanation was offered, no comp, no apologies from host, Site 275 was dirty, hours were spent cleaning kerosene off the deck and picking up trash while waiting on host to respond, next day! POOR!!!! The other couple left in the middle of the night to drive 4 hrs back home. Since there was no legitimate explanation to this we can only assume a few sites was double booked by host.

This was an incredible space to stay for a weekend! It had all we needed and was a great place to play games, drink tea and coffee, and listen to the insects late into the night. We loved it!!

Best camping experience in Black MT
Incredible camping experience! The amenities are great for a campsite. We had everything that we could hope for without having to completely fill our car with stuff. Table, chairs, shower access, bathroom, plenty of light and water. The rain guards for the deck were great and came in handy because it rained both night on our trip. And not too mention... The VIEWS!
