Spanning over 800,000 acres of New England's most beautiful scenery, White Mountain National Forest is a rugged playground for hikers, backpackers, and sightseers. The forest is home to Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern U.S., one that’s also known for its wild and unpredictable weather. Visitors can drive, take the cog railway, or hike to the top of Mount Washington for views stretching all the way to Maine and the Atlantic Ocean on a clear day. Whether you’re looking for an RV park with full hookups and camping cabins, a quiet wooded tent site in the national forest, or a secluded backcountry site miles away from others, campers will find plenty of camping areas in and around White Mountain National Forest.

1. All national forest campground reservations must be made at least seven days in advance. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance online or by phone.
2. Reservations are often required for sites with hookups, especially on summer weekends. 
3. Advance reservations are not accepted at all White Mountain National Forest campgrounds. Many campgrounds have a selection of sites available only on a first-come, first-served basis.  

New Hampshire's White Mountains are a year-round destination for both summer and winter sports. July and August are the most popular months for camping, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, and kayaking. Fall is the busiest month for sightseers looking to enjoy the changing colors. Fall colors are best from the end of September through early October. Some White Mountain National Forest campgrounds are open year-round, including the Hancock Campground. These campgrounds are plowed in winter but do not have any of the services found in summer. 

• A recreation pass is required to park at trailheads, recreation areas, and day-use areas within White Mountain National Forest. Daily and annual passes are available at Forest Service visitor centers and local businesses in Campton and North Conway. 
• The White Mountains are known for unpredictable and occasionally poor weather. Come prepared with rain gear if you plan on hiking and extra layers for sleeping. 
• White Mountain National Forest is bear country. Never leave food unattended and practice safe food storage techniques. 
• Backcountry huts are scattered throughout the White Mountains and offer family-friendly bunk-style accommodations for hikers. Reservations are strongly recommended.
