The best camping near Goose Lake State Recreation Area

On the banks of the massive Goose Lake on the Oregon-California border, the remote Goose Lake State Recreation Area offers seasonal camping on a first-come, first-served basis, complete with hot showers, flush toilets, and an RV dump station. The quiet Goose Lake Campground is a great place for birdwatching, particularly during the spring and early summer months when migratory birds flock to the region. Goose Lake is also home to a large population of mule deer, particularly known to hang around the area in late summer and into autumn.

1. The campsites at Goose Lake are not reservable in advance—they’re offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
2. It’s usually not challenging to secure a spot at the lake, especially given how remote it is, but if coming on a summer weekend, you might want to come early in the morning to choose your space (especially if you need an RV site).
3. The park has an additional grassy area where campers can pitch tents if needed.

Goose Lake State Recreation Area is open for camping from May through mid-October and for day use throughout the year, and the weather is at its warmest (and driest from late June through mid-September). Migratory birds—including, as the park’s name suggests, geese—flock here in spring and into the beginning of summer, while late summer and fall are the best times to spot mule deer, particularly at dusk and dawn.

• A tiny general store sits in the town of New Pine Creek, a mile from the park. Gas stations and groceries are available in Lakeview, a 15-minute drive away.
• You can purchase firewood and bags of ice right at the campground.
• Campfires and the use of fire rings and camp stoves may be prohibited during periods of increased wildfire risk.
• Pets are welcome, but must remain on a leash except when in the off-leash area, located on the west side of the campground.
