Denali's Doorstep Dry Camping Cabin

1 site · Lodging1 acre · Cantwell, AK
Just 30 minutes away from the South Entrance to Denali National Park! This is one of the BEST private camping cabins on the Parks Highway! Strategically located on a secluded homestead from the 1960s, you'll be able to see Mount McKinley on a clear day! The nearby Summit Lake is perfect for fly fishing and local hiking trails are accessible right from the front door. We've got a couple kayaks for rent if you'd like to explore the local lake. Experience a TRUE Alaskan living experience in this DRY cabin with Modern touches. Since there's no interior running water or septic system, we encourage our guests to bring a couple gallons of water and some water bottles for drinking/washing hands. We do provide a camping toilet (5 gallon bucket with seat and trash bags) but you'll have to haul the bags out with you when you leave - along with your trash. Electricity is provided via a Generator that we provide - but you will be responsible for refilling the fuel you use (Vitus Gas station 5 minutes from the cabin). There is heat provided via a Fuel Oil stove. To save costs on cleaning fees - you'll be responsible to leave the cabin in as good - if not better condition than you find it when you arrive. We practice "Leave No Trace" principles. Since we don't charge a cleaning fee, you'll also need to bring your own bedding (recommend a sleeping bag) and linens/towels etc. If you're flying in to Anchorage we recommend you stop in at the local Walmart and buy a cheap sleeping bag to carry with you on your journey throughout the state. The cost of a cheap sleeping bag and/or linen set is less than a typical cleaning fee. Trust us, the extra work to enjoy this cabin is worth it! It has the most INCREDIBLE scenery! Bring some dry firewood for S'mores at the fire pit and enjoy an Alaskan experience at Denali's Doorstep!

Wildthingz Dog Mushing

2 sites · Lodging3 acres · Cantwell, AK
We are a professional sled dog kennel that runs a summer tour operation, as well as hosts overnight guest in clamping rental accommodations. We are located just 30 minutes south of the famed Denali National Park & Preserve, right off the Parks highway in the quaint village of Cantwell. We are in a very accessible location that is perfect for those searching for a stay close to the National Park and other local attractions, but far from the crowded tourist areas near the entrance of Denali. At our property you will have the unique opportunity to stay with a real team of sled dogs and book a discounted tour if you want. Your accommodations are cozy, yet rustic, private and peaceful. We are off a gravel road and a short walk to the Jack River or up to the tundra. We are off-grid so all of our power is generated by generator or solar, and the tent will have a small solar charger for cell phones & tablets, but no large voltage electronics. We haul all of our water either from the river, a local spring or the gas station so we ask those staying with us are conscious and willing to limit their consumption of water here. We are in bear country, so while our sled dogs act as very good bear deterrent, we still ask people to be smart when walking around the area or storing food. Please be respectful of wildlife and keep a safe distance, make lots of noise when hiking. There is good AT&T and verizon reception here, but we do not offer wifi connectivity so take the opportunity to read a book and disconnect for a bit. We live on the property and will be able to help from 8 am to 10 pm, so contact us with questions or concerns. We hope you'll join us for a stay, surrounded by gorgeous views that you won't forget!

Camping near Healy guide

Overview

Healy is an ideal basecamp for visiting Denali National Park and Preserve. The town is just 20 minutes from the Denali Visitor Center at the start of Denali Park Road. The park is a mecca for hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, and Alaskan wildlife viewing, while the Denali/Healy region is also known for whitewater rafting, fly fishing, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Healy sits alongside the Nenana River in the spruce-covered foothills of the Alaska Range, where a number of campgrounds, cozy cabins, and glamping options draw campers looking to head into the park.

Where to go

Denali National Park and Preserve

Denali National Park spans over 6 million acres of Alaska Range peaks, glaciers, forests, and tundra. At its heart, Denali (formerly Mount McKinley) rises over 20,300 feet, making it the tallest mountain in the US. Many come to hike, backpack, or mountain climb, while biking is also permitted on the Denali Park Road. Park visitors regularly spot moose, brown bear, Dall sheep, and caribou—plus the park also employs a team of Alaskan husky sled dogs for snow patrols. You can meet these canine rangers at their kennel near the visitor center.

Denali State Park

Adjacent to Denali National Park is Alaska’s own Denali State Park. Its rolling tundra and ridge hikes can be less crowded than some of the national park’s routes, and you’ll still get panoramic views of the Alaska Range from here, as well as access to Byer’s Lake.

Fairbanks Area

Fairbanks is a 2-hour drive from Healy, offering campers plenty of rest-day amenities like restaurants, a farmers’ market, and museums. Chena Hot Springs is a popular day trip from here, and the area also features many fishing, boating, dog sledding, and snowmobiling guides and outfitters.

When to go

The best summer weather in Healy is typically between June and August. Because of Healy’s northern latitude, summer days in June may stretch for 20 hours, whereas winter days in December can see just four hours of daylight. Denali National Park is open year-round, though winter access is limited to travel by foot, snowshoe, ski, or dog sled. As part of Alaska’s subarctic boreal forest, the region also features a mix of deciduous trees like aspen and birch that make for dazzling fall foliage displays. From September to April, the northern lights may be visible.
