Pisgah Forest Mountain Meadows

5 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Pisgah Forest, NC
This 5-acre parcel was part of a larger 17-acre tract/cow pasture that was for sale in the spring of 2017. We had moved to this beautiful quiet country road the year before after spending 15 years in the hustle and bustle of West Asheville. When our neighbor put the land up for sale, we jumped at the chance to protect our view (we live across the street) and own another piece of the heaven we have come to call home. This land has a creek running through it, and is in a quiet, rural, residential area that is a mix of newcomers and families who have lived here for generations. The property has a secluded feel to it while being very conveniently located to the wonderful hiking, mountain biking, and trout fishing this area is famous for. We’re also very close to cycle shops, outfitters, groceries, restaurants, etc. We love it here and are excited to develop our plan for this space. We hope you will love it here too.

Riverside Camping on the Farm

8 sites · RVs, Tents50 acres · Mills River, NC
Sleep under the stars while listening to the river run while staying on a working farm! During the summer months watch our vegetables grow and the pickers pick! The winter months you'll enjoy a sea of green as our cover crop takes over the field. You can cool off in the river, or check out the surrounding Pisgah National Forest. Dogs on leashes are welcome and owner is responsible for cleaning up after pet. The farm provides a portable toilet but no other amenities. Campfires may be restricted, so check local regulations. This is a working farm, so please be respectful of the crops and workers and keep dogs on leashes. Fishing is not allowed in the river. Please note, if it’s rainy, the roads will be muddy and 4-wheel-drive vehicles are the best option. Head 4 miles east to the town of Mills River for restaurants, stores, and services. You can find hiking, biking, and horseback-riding trails within a short bike or car ride in Pisgah National Forest. Chimney Rock State Park is 25 miles east and offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Or perhaps go for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our guests love staying here: "This was our first time using Hipcamp and we couldn’t have been happier! Candace was great at communicating and quick to respond to our questions. Site 1 was perfect. We had so much room for just the two of us and the water access was great for our dogs to swim. Plus it was so quiet, we’ll probably never go back at state park camping! Thanks for everything and look forward to visiting again!"

Camping near Brevard guide

Overview

In Transylvania County and set just outside Pisgah National Forest, Brevard, North Carolina is surrounded by over 250 waterfalls and a vibrant local community. Visit in spring to experience the iconic White Squirrel Festival offering live music and a beer garden—the rare white squirrels allegedly escaped from a carnival truck in the 1950s, and you’ll see many scurrying around. Camping in Brevard offers wilderness opportunities from hiking and mountain biking to city entertainment in nearby Asheville. Rent a mountain cabin, choose a tent camping spot to settle into, or opt for RV camping near Brevard.

Where to go

Pisgah National Forest

In the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, Pisgah National Forest has over 500,000 acres to explore. Make sure to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway to get incredible views as you travel, then dive into over 1,000 miles of trails, including hundreds of waterfalls. The mountain peaks and valleys provide the perfect terrain for mountain biking and rock climbing, while the Pisgah Forest has excellent fishing opportunities and whitewater sports too. There’s no park entrance fee, but some cultural sites have admission prices.

Asheville, North Carolina

Set among the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is the largest city in North Carolina. It’s well-known for its art scene and historic architecture, and it’s only a 40-minute car ride from Brevard. Take the Blue Ridge Parkway (dubbed “America’s favorite drive“) to see epic mountain views from the road, then opt for camping near Asheville for a homebase to shops, breweries, and museums. There are tons of local parks with picnic areas for lunch in the sun, plus nearby glamping.

Davidson River Recreation Area

Close to the center of Brevard (only three miles away), the Davidson River Recreation Area works for the whole family. Check out rivers and waterfalls, spend the day fishing for local trout, or take an educational program in the busier months (summer and fall). The state-run Davidson River Campground is a prime choice for tent camping with shaded spots, picnic tables, flush toilets, and parking, as well as access to hiking trails. Book reservations at least four days ahead or up to six months in advance.

Sliding Rock Recreation Area

Roughly an 18-minute drive from Brevard, Sliding Rock showcases a sleek 60-foot natural rock formation with water trickling overtop—the claim to fame is the opportunity to slide down before cascading into a deep pool. Although Sliding Rock is open daily, it’s weather-dependent and can close due to heavy rainfall that causes high water levels. Lifeguards are there during the busy summer months (May until mid-September). Find beach tent camping nearby or treehouse camping for snoozing among the forest canopy.

When to go

Summer between June and August is prime time to visit Brevard, although the rainy season overlaps with the spring and summer months (May until late August), with July being the wettest. All this water (roughly 90 inches of rain annually) means it’s no surprise that Brevard is waterfall central. It’s a little cloudy all year-round, but summers are still hot and humid, with temperatures up to 83°F. Winters (especially February) are dryer, but snowfall is common between November and March.
