Mountains, Trains, and Sand Dunes

3 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Fort Garland, CO
As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you should take advantage of. Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive.  The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared.  There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land.  Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills.  Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig.  There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet.  Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land.  If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Purgatory Riverbottoms

8 sites · Tents5 acres · Trinidad, CO
If camsites are full, contact me. There is tons of space. Upon arrival, come straight down Cottonwood Avenue past the private signs where the asphalt ends and straight to the Teepee. We are on a Peninsula with the river on one side and an irrigation creek down the other. We own 1/4 stretch along the river across from the riverwalk and downtown. The "Trinidad" lights shine down from atop Simpsons Rest which is a public area. It has an incredible view of Trinidad ans hidden caves and areas to explore as well. The area we own is Picketwire Valley. It was renamed Picketwire because the French couldn't pronounce Purgatory. The French retreated to Simpsons Rest are were surrounded by Indians and were starved etc. The large caves they hid in, have since covered over.

Great Sand Dunes Desert Escape

1 site · Tent5 acres · Fort Garland, CO
This was once land owned by Forbes and while it is a part of Sangre de Cristo Ranches, it is also a part of Forbes Park and San Isabel National Forest! Learn more about this land: CALLING ALL TENT CAMPERS! It's time to enjoy some peace and quiet with breathtaking mountain views on private land. You will be the ONLY ONE on 5 acres of land that you are welcome to explore. Find yourself adventuring through the gulch, relaxing under the shade of the beautiful pinon trees, or high up on the hilltop swinging on the tree swing and enjoying the fresh breeze. At night, you may find that the views of the night sky are simply unbeatable, so don't forget to look up once you put your fire out! If no rain is expected, leave your tent fly off and gaze at the stars. On a clear night, I can guarantee you’ll see at least one shooting star at this beautiful spot! Not to mention, the sunrise and sunsets are beautiful too! Walk to the top of one of the many peaks on the property to see views for days. Adventure to the highest peak and be surprised with a tree swing! If you can, take a panoramic photo while you’re up there! To make things even better, there are three firepits on the property with campsites to go along with them. Camp at any site you prefer! My personal favorite is to camp in the gulch (when it’s not raining) - it's quiet, your safe from wind, and it's just super cool! You'll also find the "poop hut" as we call it (a small wooden shack with a portable toilet in it) in the gulch. There's parking for 2-3 cars in the front of the lot and one car directly next to the site. I suggest high-clearance vehicles. This land is located in the heart of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range. At the eastern edge of the San Luis Valley, Sangre de Cristo Ranches are virtually surrounded by the Rockies. The campsites on our land are literally in San Isabel National Forest. You will be just minutes away from so many awesome destinations! Fort Garland for supplies/gas: 10-15 mins **Dollar General has everything you need** Great Sand Dunes NP Entrance: 45 mins  Sanchez Reservoir: 30 mins  Lathrop State Park: 45 mins  Alamosa: 45 mins  San Isabel National Forest: 0 mins, you're in it! The closest towns to the property include Fort Garland, Alamosa, Walsenburg, and San Luis. Cell phone reception above the gulch, but once you’re 6-10 ft inside the gulch, you’ll lose connection. You'll find reception increases the closer you get to Fort Garland. Fires are welcome in the designated fire rings ONLY. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A DRY AREA AND SURROUNDING BRUSH CAN LIGHT UP VERY QUICKLY. If there is a fire ban in place, please follow the law for your personal safety. There are plenty of fallen branches and dead limbs on the property, please feel free to use any remaining cut wood, fallen branches, and/or dead trees, but NO CUTTING BRANCHES NOR TREES DOWN. Please do not allow your fire to exceed the size of the fire ring. The fire pits are dug deep into the ground to protect your fire from wind and potential hazards. If you find that it’s a very windy day, please feel free to use the campsite and fire pit in the gulch to help block the wind. Please do not touch nor damage the stone structure that's being built as it is supporting loose sand and old pinon trees. Please leave any project tools alone and do not make any adjustments to our land/structures. IF YOU'RE HUNTING, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SHOOTING AT THE TREES. Please feel free to bring targets or shoot into the sand mounds. :)

Cedar Hills Oliva Ranch

6 sites · RVs, Tents105 acres · Walsenburg, CO
Cedar Hills Oliva Ranch is a 105-acre ranch with nine 11.6-acre campsites, each of them on beautiful and varying heights and terrain, with a secluded feel as each is located out of view from the other campsites. They are excellent for "primitive" camping year-round, and comprise wildlife (deer, elk, bear, hawks, antelope, etc.), grassy meadows, cedar-covered hills both gradual and steep, sandstone rock formations, seasonal white sand arroyos, and the occasional cattle wandering through. Because of its southern Colorado geography, snow typically does not accumulate deeper than 3"-4", even in the deepest winter months, so it makes camping just as easy and pleasant from November through March. Each campsite has its own character and unique views of nature, so nine camping trips on each of our sites will feel different from the previous adventure, each presenting a distinctly intimate feel. Additionally, a great benefit of Cedar Hills Oliva Ranch is while campers may enjoy deafening silence and see every star in the Milky Way Galaxy on a clear night, just 10 minutes from the ranch south on CR 69 lies a 24-hour gas station and three fast food restaurants. From there, another 5 minutes south, is the historic town of Walsenburg, where you may find expanded restaurant choices, a Safeway, and hardware store for other provisions - and more! In case of a "medical mishap," Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center is approximately 18 minutes from any of our campsites, and open 24 hours. Lastly, while not visible from the ranch, a new cell tower was erected approximately 2 miles northeast and is very reliable from anywhere on the ranch when having a clear view of the eastern horizon. We look forward to hosting you and your fellow campers at Cedar Hills Oliva Ranch. It is beautiful, private and secluded, and provides a great environment for all ages and levels of spirit. And if needed, the anchors of modern convenience and necessities are not far. If not heaven itself, we feel our ranch is at least in the same zip code. See you soon!

The best camping near Trinidad Lake State Park guide

Overview

About

Not far from the New Mexico border, Trinidad Lake State Park offers a warmer alternative to many of Colorado's higher-altitude parks further north. As its name suggests, the park sits at Trinidad Lake, a large expanse that attracts anglers, boaters, and jet skiers in great droves in the summer months. There’s also an archery range that's available for year-round use. If you're looking to spend the night, there are 73 campsites spread across two campgrounds, about a third of which are open all year long. The majority offer 50-amp electrical service and there are seven with full hookups.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for families: Carpios Ridge Campground has tons of amenities, with showers, laundry facilities, a dump station, a playground, and even an archeological site.
  • Best for a quiet fishing trip: South Shore Campground has only 10 basic campsites and offers easy access to south bank fishing spots

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. You can reserve a campsite over the phone or by using the Colorado Parks and Wildlife online reservation system.
  2. Reservations can be made from six months in
  3. advance up to your date of arrival. Book early if you want to stay on a summer weekend.
  4. The South Shore Campground is closed from mid-October through mid-May and some of the sites at Carpios close from mid-October through mid-March. Sites 1-23, 62, and 63 are open throughout the year.
  5. If you can’t find a site in the park, you can find private campgrounds and Hipcamps in the area. Fishers Peak State Park nearby is also a possibility.

When to go

Trinidad Lake is in a more temperate part of Colorado, and while it can get pretty cold here on winter nights, daytime temperatures rarely linger below freezing. The hot summer months draw the most crowds, but temperatures here often stay warm well into September, and you'll be faced with fewer crowds if you come between Labor Day and the beginning of October. Note that a limited amount of year-round camping is available in Carpios Campground.

Know before you go

  • You’ll find gas stations, supermarkets, restaurants, and other services in the town of Trinidad, a five-minute drive from the park.
  • You can buy hunting and fishing licenses, firewood, ice, and souvenirs at the visitor center near the Carpios Ridge campground.
  • Carpios Ridge Campground offers ADA-accessible campsites, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and drinking fountains. There's also one accessible site at South Shore. There are also two ADA-compliant trails in the park.
  • Campfire bans are enforced during periods of high forest fire risk.
  • Parking fees are not included in the price of camping reservations. You will need a day or annual parking pass for each vehicle in your party.
