Our farm experience offers a no-fuss stay on a real working farm approximately 15 miles south Bakersfield. 20 acres surround you, bounded by the Tehachapi Mountains and within the San Joaquin Valley. Sites are perched on the edge of the pond, stocked with fish or enjoy the provided paddle board or kayak to explore the pond. Each site offers a good amount of shade for a portion of the day and has its own picnic table, water spigot and fire pit. Campers provide firewood. There is one shared, plumbed bathroom between campsites and one shared outdoor shower (with hot water). There's no electricity at your rustic home away from home, but the evening stars light up the sky. We have the following sites available: Bring Your Own (BYO) Tent - all sites Van Parking (No RVs, Trailers or Trucks with Campers) - sites 4 & 6 only. We are an organic working farm - no pesticides or herbicides are sprayed on the farm or around the camp areas. Depending on the day you stay, we may have more activity than others. We have staff on and off the farm coming and going from the farmers markets we participate in. We have working dogs that love to keep predators away at night by barking if they sense any around. We have roosters that crow, lizards, bugs and insects, bull frogs in the pond, California King snakes, and lots of birds/hawks/owls. We do our best to create an environment for all the creatures to live and thrive in the environment that's natural to them.

Our Songdog Camps are sparsely scattered atop a 200 foot mesa that looks west over a valley offering stunning desert sunsets. Our Ranch House and Glampsites are available on occasion. This land was sparsely populated by the Chumash Indian and is evident by the numerous cave painting that remain here near the Caliente mountain. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Located in the national sequoia forest, Havilah pines homestead is a unique place, we are in the middle of a canyon, rural and remote but not too remote, do note that there is no cell service here but we do offer wifi service for a fee. the closest town and Lake is about 20 minutes away. we have the cleanest air in Kern, blue skies most days and stars during the night like you have never seen them in the city! it can get toasty during the day, but once that sun goes behind the mountain it cools off that some times you want to put something on! We are a micro farm growing organic food and practicing non GMO sustainable organic farming methods even our animals eat only organic non GMO feed, among our livestock are chickens, turkeys and guinea fowl, they happily free range on the homestead and produce delicious eggs, if you haven't eaten eggs like free range ones then you must try them! the taste is light years different than the store bought ones... It is a quite and peaceful place(except the roosters and guineas), at night you hear crickets and frogs and early in the morning wake up to a pleasant tune of wild bird's symphony.

There is a fitness and nature trail on the property and Pacific Crest trail is approx 20 to 30 min drive, Mountain park which has many miles of hiking trails and an Indian reservation with hikes to many petroglphs. Things to see are the World famous Tehachapi railway loop, historic downtown, vineyards, mountain spirit center a Buddhist temple, glider rides, bicycle riding and fishing. There is no end to the beauty, history and adventure all around the property. Life took us to the Kern River Valley after moving out of Los Angeles. We enjoy living in the Southern Sierras immersed in all its natural beauty. The small but magnificent town of Kernville is approximately two and a half miles north of us. Our livestock includes horses, dairy goats, sheep, and rabbits: Most of which are raised and bred as 4H or FFA projects. You may be wondering why our farm is called "Underworld Farms". In a nutshell, since our ranch is on the footprint of the historic town of Whiskey Flat, we just happen to be south of the old Whiskey Flat "Boot Hill" Cemetery. Our "driveway" is the road that led from the old town of Kernville to the cemetery. Deer Ravine Lodgings

We opened up our private mountain property during COVID 2020 so people could safely get into nature and enjoy the fresh air, peace and quiet, and wildlife. We live on an 11-acre ranch in the beautiful and quiet community. This is not a property for loud or raucous parties. Only registered guests are allowed. Pets on leashes are welcome upon prior approval only. Absolutely no fires allowed May-December due to extreme fire danger. No running water and no WiFi. Learn more about this land:Enjoy a luxurious outdoor camping experience in a 16'x20' White Duck canvas tent on a large deck. There is a separate, private bathroom/shower building. Relax and sleep like a baby in a hand-hewn log king-sized bed and queen sized sofa sleeper and opulent linens. The Glamp tent and deck include a private deck, propane BBQ grill, sink with running well water, a refrigerator, Keurig, microwave, and TV with DVD's (no WiFi). July and August are hot in the tent between 2pm-6pm. The evenings are cooling down. We have two fans and an evaporative cooler and an electric heater. ABSOLUTELY NO FIRES MAY-DECEMBER DUE TO EXTREME FIRE DANGER. This is a "Leave No Trace" space and a "Shoeless Tent." Leashed pets are allowed with prior approval by hosts. For your convenience, we have a crate and dog bed available. A 7-person bullfrog spa is available upon request and availability. The total land is 2.36 acres and the land below the parking area is part of the property and can be used to relax, walk around, or let dogs run. There's no onsite manager but there is someone within a mile of the property if there are needs or issues. Let me know if you want to buy wood as the caretaker sells wood for $10 a night or less if you stay more than one night. If you don't think you can pull a trailer from the sharp left on the road you can go up the road about 1.5 miles and turn around so it's an easy right.

Organic Farm Outside of Bakersfield

Our farm experience offers a no-fuss stay on a real working farm approximately 15 miles south Bakersfield. 20 acres surround you, bounded by the Tehachapi Mountains and within the San Joaquin Valley. Sites are perched on the edge of the pond, stocked with fish or enjoy the provided paddle board or kayak to explore the pond. Each site offers a good amount of shade for a portion of the day and has its own picnic table, water spigot and fire pit. Campers provide firewood. There is one shared, plumbed bathroom between campsites and one shared outdoor shower (with hot water). There's no electricity at your rustic home away from home, but the evening stars light up the sky. We have the following sites available: Bring Your Own (BYO) Tent - all sites Van Parking (No RVs, Trailers or Trucks with Campers) - sites 4 & 6 only. We are an organic working farm - no pesticides or herbicides are sprayed on the farm or around the camp areas. Depending on the day you stay, we may have more activity than others. We have staff on and off the farm coming and going from the farmers markets we participate in. We have working dogs that love to keep predators away at night by barking if they sense any around. We have roosters that crow, lizards, bugs and insects, bull frogs in the pond, California King snakes, and lots of birds/hawks/owls. We do our best to create an environment for all the creatures to live and thrive in the environment that's natural to them.

Overview

A couple of hours north of Los Angeles on Interstate 5, at the southernmost end of California’s Central Valley, Bakersfield is a popular stop-off for fueling up and grabbing groceries and supplies before heading out into the Sequoia National Forest. The city is a major hub for the surrounding agricultural industry, and while it's not a typical tourist destination, it does offer quite a few attractions, including art and history museums. The California Living Museum may be of particular interest to those interested in zoology, as it puts a heavy focus on native plants and animals.

Where to go

The Mojave Desert

If you like the hot, dry climate of Bakersfield, you'll love the Mojave Desert, with its wide-open sandy expanses interrupted by canyons and rock formations. The region's star attraction, Death Valley National Park, is a great place for winter camping and dark-sky stargazing.

California's Central Coast

Some of California’s prettiest stretches of coastline can be found in the Central Coast region, from the famous Big Sur to the palm-flanked Refugio State Beach. This region also has plenty of cities worth checking out, from stylish Santa Barbara to enchanting Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Sequoia National Forest and the Inyo Mountains

Not to be confused with Sequoia National Park, the Sequoia National Forest and the Inyo Mountains Wilderness just beyond it has dozens of developed and backcountry campgrounds and over a thousand miles of trails, plus ample opportunities to swim, boat, or mountain bike amongst towering old-growth trees.

When to go

The temperatures in Bakersfield generally range from pleasantly cool (in the dead of winter) to sunny and scorching. Summers are dry and often see highs in the 100s, and while winters are cool, Bakersfield rarely gets freezing temperatures. October and April are ideal if you plan to camp in the area, with warm (but not overly hot) temperatures and not nearly the number of crowds found in the summer.
