Not a pretty campsite, but a great place to stay in NYC!
Floyd Bennett Field is an old airstrip that has been taken over by the National Parks Service. If you've ever driven, or ridden your bike to Rockaway Beach— like I have—then you've probably passed it without even realizing it. What's tucked away behind long retired cement runways is a little piece of Brooklyn paradise that might surprise you.
Complete with a well stocked camp store, bathrooms, running water and picnic areas, Floyd Bennett Field hosts a slew of well maintained tent sites. Each site has it's own fire ring and picnic table. The foliage and wooded area surrounding the tent sites will let you forget for a little while that you're still in one of the biggest cities in the world—which is why Camp Getaway is aptly named.
