Camping near Freeman guide

Overview

With vast open prairies and rolling hills, the landscape around Freeman, South Dakota promises a restful camping escape. Less than 20 miles southwest of Freeman, discover the tranquil waters of Lake Menno. Campground amenities include electric hookups for RVs, access to potable water, picnic tables, and a small playground for kids. From the boat launch, head out onto the remarkably clear waters to reel in largemouth bass and black crappie. For more of a forested setting, head about an hour east to Newton Hills State Park. RV and tent camping here offers easy access to volleyball and basketball courts, a grand amphitheater, and picnic shelters. Cabin rentals provide an even more comfortable stay. Hiking and wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the Blue Diamond and Woodland Trail Loop with opportunities to spot over 200 species of birds, plus white-tailed deer, marmots, and red foxes. On the first Saturday in October, the trail is illuminated with candles for FestiFall, an annual event featuring arts and crafts, hayrides, and live bluegrass music.
