RV camping in Northern California guide

Overview

California makes it easy to find its outdoor superstars by RV—from Oregon on down, Highway 101 and Interstate 5 pass right by Redwood forests, rugged coastal bluffs, Mount Shasta, Wine Country, the San Francisco Bay Area, and the Santa Cruz Mountains. When you hit I-80 in Sacramento, it’s a straight shot to the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe. There’s something for every RVer: whale-watching at Point Reyes National Seashore, surfing at Pacifica State Beach, wandering through Redwood National and State Parks, boating on Shasta Lake, hiking in Lassen National Forest, and much more. RV options vary widely from comfortable resorts with full hookups, pools, and amenities to state park campgrounds with no services. Along the coast, expect cool temps, wind, and moody clouds until you get south of Sonoma. Inland, summers are hot and dry with usually mild, wet Winters. In Tahoe, be prepared for snow in the winter with potentially dangerous driving conditions.
